My dad came home from a banquet last night with a new toy for us.
Its is a Marlin 917vs .17 caliber, 22" heavy ss. It is a really nice looking gun. It has a grayish lamenant stock with a fox and some writing (forgot what it said) engraved in the side and a really heavy stainless barrel.
I probobly wouldn't have bought a gun like this since I don't do alot of varment hunting, but since it was free I might as well have some fun with it. Is this a decent gun? What ammo do you recomend I get for it? I have to pic up a scope yet, Im not sure which one or how much I should spend.
How much would this gun have been if I would have bought it?

nice gun the marlin 17hmr's are very accurate. there are amoung the best. I bought mine because of all the great reviews. go to www.rimfirecentral.com there lots of info on it. i mounted a simmons pro hunter 4-12x40AO on mine.

My Marlin shoots great! I'm glad I got this one instead of the Ruger. Most of the early articles comparing the 2 Marlins and the Ruger showed that the Marlins were better shooters.

F4YG Now you're being bias. LOL. Only kidding. The Marlins are nice rifles.I would rather have the Ruger but you know I'm bias myself.

Well mine is a nice shooting gun but the problem with it is that it only goes off about 50% of the time, I thought it was the ammo so I tried Two other makes and the same thing, It dents the back of the brass but it wouldnt fire. Its been sent back to Marlin for repairs & hopefully returns in good working order

theres a 5 shot group at 50 yards. there not really great, but i was lying on a piece of plywood to keep me off the snow with just bi pods. there was also a bit of wind. i know it will do better if i do my part and hold her steady.
