How much to pay for Rem. 7400...

A friend of mine has a remington model 7400 (wood, blue) in good condition...rings no scope....what do you think a good price would be? Does anyone know how much they weigh....he says it's hevier than the 7.5lbs it's listed at. The gun's probably 5 years old. Thanks.

My gun dealer says stay away from them . They all have a bad habit of jamming . You best check that out before buying . JMO.

BAR are the only semi-autos I'll use. Got a 742 (precursor to the 7400) and it's a POS.

I have one and have killed I don't know how many deer. I have had it since 1985 or so in a 270. It shoots well and never had jammed. It was a challenge working up a new load for it due to not only do you have to worry about accuracy but now cycling correctly. I found slower powders did real well. I think it gets a bad rap for the most part. I have a feeling most of it is hear say.

A bar is a much better weapon but you are going to pay twice as much for it.

250 to 300 would be a nice price depending on the condition.

Never ever heard the 742 called "POS" before.

Killed probably 10 deer with a 742 '06. It did jam once..but I can tell ya that was strictly due to needing cleaned. After they are thoroughly cleaned I never had another problem. A gun is like anything else..they wont last forever without a little maintenance and if ya dont wanna keep it pretty clean you may be better off going with something else. I have heard a lot of crap about the Remington Auto loaders..but I had ZERO probs with a clean gun! Hunted from '87 to 94 with one and bought another a couple of years back and it has proven trouble free as well.

You arent gonna get 1 inch groups out of them but both of mine shot 2-3 inch groups at 100 yards which is perfectly acceptable for normal hunting ranges.

one mans opinion! Like anything else, you have to sift through the stuff you hear on here and decide for yourself if it is. I have heard the same thing about the 742's and 7400's, but IMO if they were all POS's there wouldnt be so many of them out there, and they wouldnt keep making them! Yes I "probably" think the 742's have a little better wood on them, and have "heard" less problems with them, but I would need to base my decision on each rifle separately. My father has owned a 742 since 1970. He has bought other rifles (alot nicer) but still carries the 742 every year for deer season, it has NEVER jammed on him, and he shoots just plain ol core-lokts through it!

VOZ Save your money.I see some here are happy with their 742's and 7400's.They didn't get the nicknames Jam-Master or Jam-o-matic for nothing.I had two 742's. Both are gone and no more will ever come home with me.If you insist on a semi auto go with a Browning BAR.Yeah more expensive but allot better rifle.I'm not trying to insult people's guns but you could do allot better then a Rem.7400 or older 742.
