Guys, 400 dollars vs 700 dollars. I mean come on, what do you expect?

My point exactly.Allot more money for allot more gun.I would rather have a Remington 7600 or 760 over any of their semi auto rifles.Since I've had 742's I'm speaking from experience.

Mine were kept clean. They didn't jam often but enough to where I wouldn't depend on them.I'm sure some of them operated correctly . Those were few and far between. If you have a good one consider yourself lucky.

It's called an OPINION folks.

I said I think the BAR is 3 times the gun and that the 742 30/06 I have experience with is worthless and costs my dad a deer per year. He'd be better off with a baseball bat and a bucket of corn. Why he continues to use it when he has other more viable options is beyond me.

Cost be damned, if I'm buying a gun, I don't care how cheap or expensive it is. I just want what I want for what I want. For my money, I have no more interest in a Remington autoloading centerfire rifle than I have of catching malaria.

Oh, and I really appreciate the little jab with the not knowing how to clean it business. Maybe it's a lemon. Maybe it's got the worn out rails (which 7400's and 742's are known to do) and just don't work as good. maybe it's otherwise worn out.

But even when it's cleaned, it has it's moments of failure. If you love yours and it does what you want, who the hell am I to say you should want something else? More power to you if you own a 742 or 7400 and love it.

But I wouldn't give any more than a few pairs of my dirty underwear for one.

My wife has a 7400 and like everyone else has said as long as its clean it does very well. I too like the Brownings but I don't think that they are any more accurate, all autos are going to be inaccurate compared to single shots, or bolts. But I don't think that one could say that overall the Brownings or the Remingtons are going to be more accurate. Its all depends upon the individual rifle, just like bolts actions some shoot great and others aren't going to group worth a crap. As far as jamming goes I do agree that the BAR's are going to be more reliable. Also I agree with razormatt that if you got a dependable gun (like my wifes) then great, but if it jams no matter what you do to it, and it costs you an animal then yes its a POS and belongs in the junk yard or up on a wall for decoration. Good luck!

THE 7400 REPRESENTS REMINGTON WORKING THE BUGS OUT OF THE MODELS 740, FOUR, 74, AND 742. THE 7400, IS NOT A BAR, BUT THEN A BAR IS TWICE THE COST. I HAVE USED THEM FOR YEARS FOR SWAMP HUNTING IN THICK STUFF AND HAVE NEVER HAD A JAM. THE RIFLE'S NOT GOING TO SHOOT MOA, BUT HECK, IT'S A 400 RIFLE. THE ONLY 400 DOLLAR RIFLES THAT CAN SHOOT MOA OR BETTER FOR THE PRICE ARE SAVAGE BOLTS.

If you can get the 7400 for $300 or under, I'd say you have a fair deal. I have a 7400 in 30.06, and it's never jammed on me in 12 years. I always clean it after use. With 180 grain handloads I easily get 1.5 to 2.0 groups at 100 yards. The reason I got it was for hunting in heavy brush where I might need a fast follow-up shot. If I know I'll be in open country I will take a .308 or .243 bolt action instead.

Buying a Rem semi auto 742 is like playing Russian roulette.....you might win and you might loose.......I've seen one in .30-06 that was really great and very accurate .....and I've seen them that were a "Pain"....
There's none in my cabinet and not likely ever will be......a BAR however is another matter.....
