However, if I were buying a new rifle today for bear I would look at the 35Whelen. The Whelen can be hard to find, but looks like Remington is making some again, the 700 CDL model. Also available in a pump action from Remington.

yep just what everyone else pretty much said, i am in agreement with. as for the whelen... yeah it's a heckuva round short of going to a full blown "magnum" type of round... i have a 700 chambered in 35 Whelen AI... only issue with the Whelen is finding ammunition readily available... if you reload then no issue... but if all you want to do is buy it... well that's a crap shoot... short of ordering it...
i also find a 3" 12 gauge effective on them there critters at closer ranges...
