However, if I were buying a new rifle today for bear I would look at the 35Whelen. The Whelen can be hard to find, but looks like Remington is making some again, the 700 CDL model. Also available in a pump action from Remington.
I was just cruising Remingtons site today and saw they had the Whelen in the new CDL.........hmmmmmm got my wheels a turnin. As most guys have said on here, chosing the right bullet, and shot placement is important. A friend was on a bear hunt last year, and his guide in Maine told him, that the .444 is the gun he recommends when asked this question.

yep just what everyone else pretty much said, i am in agreement with. as for the whelen... yeah it's a heckuva round short of going to a full blown "magnum" type of round... i have a 700 chambered in 35 Whelen AI... only issue with the Whelen is finding ammunition readily available... if you reload then no issue... but if all you want to do is buy it... well that's a crap shoot... short of ordering it...

i also find a 3" 12 gauge effective on them there critters at closer ranges...

Both Remington and Federal load the 35 Whelen. Conley Precision also has several different loads. I have a CDL and I'm very happy with the performance and it's a pleasure to shoot.
