Depends on your application......standard .308 do well so long as ranges don't get extreme and you aren't facing off against a hardened target. Otherwise step up to a .338 Lapua or a .50 BMG just keep in mind their penetration capabilites.

I've got a lot of guns I don't really need, but I like to be throrough...these are the rifles I bought with this type of question in mind....

For ranges out to 300yrds I've got an AR-15 Bushmaster Stainless target rifle with several wilson upgrades.

300-1000 I've got a Remington 40X and 700PSS .308 with extensive gunsmithing to each.

for 600-1500 I bought an Armalite AR-30 .338 Lapua, hasn't had any work done except the trigger

and for everything that I can see, an Armalite AR-50 .50BMG, also only with trigger work.

I've got a few other 22cal varmint rifles that would serve well out to around 300-400, and also an M-1 Garand and an M-1A Nat'l Match (both springfields) that would certainly do the job out to 600yrds.

Personally, if I were an "urban" sniper, I'd like an AR variant with a 14" supressed heavy bbl about 1.5" in diameter with all the trimmings done up by Wilson.

I'd go with the NEF handi rifle or ultra. Probably in 223 with the bull barrel as long as they sell.

For one it's a cheap throw down gun and plenty accurate for man size targets, even heads, well past 500 yards. It doesn't spit the brass out on the ground and it is EZ to quiet down. It doesn't take much cash to build up interchangeable barrels so to make the sniping look like a bigger operation than it really is and the identifying ballistic marks and case matching is easily changed. As cheap as they are it could just be a throw down.

If you are talking about more than one shot, you aren't talking sniping any way.
