I load for a FN SPR that is outstanding. The FBI just approved it for buying along with the H-S. The FN can be had for 1350 dollars. What I like most about it is the chrome lined barrel. I mean after shooting this thing 40 rounds, there is almost now copper fouling. It only takes a few minutes to clean out the copper and carbon. It has excellent cold shot POI repeatability too. Almost all myrifles POI cold shot with oil in the barrel is 1-2MOA off center. But this FN doesn't have that issue. It comes with a McMillian stock and the one I shoot is guarnteed for sub .5MOA. Has controlled round feed, 3 position safety, and detachable mag, with a real metal floor plate and trigger guard.

Good value for the price.

I have had PSS's and they just don't compare in the features mentioned.

biscuit.....I was just wondering what rifles you thought were good......range doesnt matter....but for a sniper rifle it would need to be accurate at long ranges.

Are you talking Military sniper OR Civilian sniper (as in police)? Big difference with respect to actual ranges to target. For example, I read that the average shot made by a police sniper with the LA police dept was less than 200 yards (just down the block from the bad guy). And many were just across the street. Such distances are quite unusual for the military sniper.

If I was in the business I would go for a Remington 700 heavy barrel in 7.62 nato (.308 win) and put a good 3x9 scope on it. That way you could cover both close work and reach out for a long shot. In my USMC days in the early 70's our snipers dropped VC at 900 yards no problem. You can certainly set up more powerful and longer range rigs; you are also looking at really expensive stuff, though. That is why the range question. I had a .222 Remington with a low report that would be fine for in town police work. I guess people use 223's now.

I continue to hear issues concerning late model Remingtons, though. Not meaning to stir up the board, but if I was buying new, I would take a careful look at it.

RE: Sniper Rifle

Jake, I agree with you 100% on the 308 Win. This round is an excellent choice for short, urban situations or long range applications. The correct selection of bullet for each application is the only decision needed. As for the 222 and 5.56 they are quite temperamental when a shot is required through glass or even curtain material. With such a small bullet backed with all that speed, deflection becomes a primary concern, especially in an urban situation.;)

RE: Sniper Rifle

Yup. If there is anything between you and the meat, the 223 is just another squirrel rifle.

.50 BMG Barret rifles.

At ranges where .308s and .338s start to peter out, the .50s still have a lot of real estate that they can cover.

The best BCs you can get with .308 bullets is around .500, while .50 bullets can have BCs over 1.0, meaning they buck the wind much better, and are slowed down far less by air drag.

Here's a good similation for long range shooting. Note the amount of wind drift adjustment you need to make with the .308 rifle, versus the .50.

Briman The Barrett and McMillan 50 BMG's are exceptional long range rifles. There application in Iraq is a perfect match. But you wouldn't want to use a 50 as an urban sniper rifle. That bullet will take out a block wall, your target and the next four houses before it expends all it energy. Not alot of fun to shoot for multiple shots in repetition either.[:-]

Not fun?:D

The only one I shot was a home made bolt action contraption, it didn't have much recoil, but it far less fun to be off to the side of it because of the muzzle blast from the huge compensator.;)

I didn't get the chance for the Barrett, but I did have a couple of shots with the McMillan. You deifinatly don't want your spotter to far to either side when you touch that animal off. I shot at a target 1,400 yards with 2 rounds of tracer amo at Camp Pendleton and the bullet ricoched off the sand AFTER hitting the target. Now THAT'S some smoke.[:-]

All depends, if your gonna shoot at me, I'd probably say a BB gun!

In .308, I think my Steyr Manlicher SSG would take some beating!

RE: Sniper Rifle

Depends on your application......standard .308 do well so long as ranges don't get extreme and you aren't facing off against a hardened target. Otherwise step up to a .338 Lapua or a .50 BMG just keep in mind their penetration capabilites.

RE: Sniper Rifle

I've got a lot of guns I don't really need, but I like to be throrough...these are the rifles I bought with this type of question in mind....

For ranges out to 300yrds I've got an AR-15 Bushmaster Stainless target rifle with several wilson upgrades.

300-1000 I've got a Remington 40X and 700PSS .308 with extensive gunsmithing to each.

for 600-1500 I bought an Armalite AR-30 .338 Lapua, hasn't had any work done except the trigger

and for everything that I can see, an Armalite AR-50 .50BMG, also only with trigger work.

I've got a few other 22cal varmint rifles that would serve well out to around 300-400, and also an M-1 Garand and an M-1A Nat'l Match (both springfields) that would certainly do the job out to 600yrds.

Personally, if I were an "urban" sniper, I'd like an AR variant with a 14" supressed heavy bbl about 1.5" in diameter with all the trimmings done up by Wilson.

RE: Sniper Rifle

I'd go with the NEF handi rifle or ultra. Probably in 223 with the bull barrel as long as they sell.

For one it's a cheap throw down gun and plenty accurate for man size targets, even heads, well past 500 yards. It doesn't spit the brass out on the ground and it is EZ to quiet down. It doesn't take much cash to build up interchangeable barrels so to make the sniping look like a bigger operation than it really is and the identifying ballistic marks and case matching is easily changed. As cheap as they are it could just be a throw down.

If you are talking about more than one shot, you aren't talking sniping any way.
