I've got an old Marlin bolt action goose gun, 12 ga.
It's got a 36" bbl, and if you put a 5X5 piece of cardboard up at 90 yards, shoot a 3" 00 buck magnum through it (which has 15 pellets) and you will count 13-15 holes (depening on how good you are with it).
At 50 yards or less, I think it'd knock an elk right on his butt. Of course, he might get back up. None of those pellets would probably have enough energy to individually kill him.

You need to check local regulations. While I have no doubt my SP-10 with Federal 3 1/2 inch 10 guage magnum loads would kill an Elk withing 50 yards, California Big Game Regulations require the use of rifled slugs only when using shotguns to hunt elk. Some states may allow it, some may not.

would be great fodder, for one of those TV shows. Hunter sneaks up on elk. aims & fires. direct hit with 000 buckshow from 3.5in shell from 50-60 yards. Elk yells, then proceeds to
charge & stomp hunter & TV crew. Show over
