Remington Shot Gun

Hello,

I'm new to the board, and wanted to know what people think about the Remington 870 Express Deer Gun. I just bought a brand new one for $326. The outdoor store was having a sale. I bought this gun primarily for Deer hunting. Its a 20" smooth bore with the deer sights. Anyone have this gun or know about it? If so, what shot do you use that you have found is good for white tail?

This is the one I bought, it was a great price.

Many thanks all!

Well, i would recommend a rifled barrel instead of the smooth, but either way. The smoothbore is good for rifled slugs, but not for the better, longer range sabot slugs.

I shoot an 870 in 20ga with the rifled barrel and copper-solid slugs, and have shot deer as far away as 120yds with dead on accuracy.

The difference with the rifled slugs is they will drop much more past 80yds and arent nearly as accurate, but pack a much healthier punch at short range than sabots.

Get it sighted in and blast yourself a big 'un.

Thanks for the info. Just to be clear on this topic, If I wanted to shoot sabot, I would have to buy a rifled barrel for it, otherwise I can safely shoot rifled slugs with the barrel it came with no problem then? Additionally, with a rifled slug and my smooth bore barrel, what kind of distance can I expect? I mean, how far away from a deer could I be to ensure an effective kill?

Fraze, I don't mean to make you feel bad but you could have bought the same gun at Walmart with a rifled barrel for less than $300.[&:]

I live in Ontario, Canada, the biggest "gun" you can get here is a crossman pellet gun at the Wal-Marts here :)

I priced out the Rifled 870 Deer vs the Smoothbore 870 Deer at some stores here (LeBaron, BassPro and a few others) and the 870 I bought was the cheapest I could get at $326, the cheapest 870 with a fully rifled barrel was $445. I can buy a fully rifled slug barrel for my gun for about $145.

No worries eh! I wish the Wal-Mart's here DID sell guns, I would have bought there for sure. They do sell ammo, but the selection is not the greatest :(

Fraze,

You can use rifled slugs in your smooth bore, as for distance I don't know what to expect, as I have always used rifled barrels, My personal limit is around 125 yards... You should be able to find saboted rounds for your gun as well.

If you ever go get another gun I suggest an H&R breakopen 20 gauge with a rifled barrel, mine has been superbly accurate for a slug gun and it is very inexpensive, I have the heavy barrel so the gun weighs like 10 pounds though.
