Most states for big game it is 6mm / .224. Some states a .22 centerfire is legal. Usually there is also a minimum energy rating at "X" yards associated with this also.

Texas requires a centerfire cartridge for game animals. Rimfire is not allowed.

In the state of Oklahoma the minimum is .224 caliber firing at least a 55 grain expanding bullet. FMJ are not allowed. This is the minimum for deer. It's not legal for Elk in Oklahoma.

Kansas allows any rifle with a bore bigger than 0.230"...most people call the minimum cartridge then a .243win, since that's the smallest bore diameter legal, however, that says nothing for the power.

A .25acp rifle carbine (if one existed) would be legal in Kansas. I myself have used a 9mm rifle carbine, as well as a .45acp rifle carbine for whitetails, and I did indeed contact the D of W&P on the issue before hand. I've also hunted deer with a .32H&R mag custom single shot, although I don't recommend most people try any of the above. But I must say that 1000ft.lbs. of impact energy theories are worthless. Not even a .357mag has that much muzzle energy, let alone impact energy..

Pistols must be of .230" bore or larger with a minimum case length of over so long. It's basically a dividing line between .357mag length cartridges and the auto type cartridges.
