Melissa,
Check out these links. All can be had in 7mm-08 or 270Win. And, don't worry about
a shorter stock/youth model. Any decent gunsmith can cut a little off the length of a stock for you, and remount the recoil pad, and shouldn't be too expensive either.
Barrels can also be cut/shortened & recrowned if need be.
I have one of the Remington 700LSS Mountain Rifles in 270Win. Lightweight, accurate,
and mild recoil. New this year from Winchester is the Model 70 Featherweight in
stainless steel, but with walnut stock - very nice. Think I'll have to try for one of these
myself; maybe a 6.5x55 Swede.
Take your time. Better yet, get yourself to a well stocked gun shop, maybe up in Springfield, and check out a few. If there's a gun show to be held in your area, go and do a little "window" shopping. See what feels best to you.

ps: Can't recommend the Ruger Compacts - too short of barrel which makes for very
loud muzzle blast, not to mention poor balance/handling characteristics (IMHO).

I just bought a 7mm-08....I dont think you can go wrong with that caliber. However just shop around and try a bunch of em till ya find "THE" one you want. Most all gun companies make a smaller profile gun..so have fun with it and check out every one you can get your hands on. Almost everybody is chambering for the 7-08 now so it wont be a hard search. Remember...ya never need a reason to buy another gun..lol..enjoy your hunt!
