i have used it on whitetail in the past i think i was using 165g. hornady sst. as for overkill i don`t think it will make them any deader than a .243 will it will all depend on how far your shots are and if the recoil is a factor to you. a lot of folks will say that is a bit to much for a deer and that a lot of hunters think that a larger rifle will off set poor shooting imho it you want to use it well you use it and have fun

The 300-win mag is "over-kill" for deer but who cares. My 300-win mag was the only rifle I hunted with for over 12-years. During that time I killed a ton of deer. I handload for my 300-win mag. My pet load is 68-grains H-4831SC, Fed-215 primer & 200-grain Nosler Partition. This load has worked great on deer, elk, antelope & black bear.

"Overkill" ? What's that? Ain't no such thing as "overkill". Okay, a 300Win.Mag may be
more than needed to take a deer, but dead is dead. Is there something beyond dead?
This whole concept of "overkill" is nonsense. If you had a 375H&H, and want to use it for
deer hunting, so be it, use it. I don't think the dead deer is going to complain about what you shot him/her with - unless you use too little a gun. Or worse, make a bum shot.
Now, if you're handloading I'd suggest you use either 150gr. or 165gr. bullets for deer.
Moderate velocity may be appropriate if your hunting is in close cover.
