muzzlebrake?
hi i was just whanting some info on muzzle brakes. what do you all know about them? my smith said he costom makes them to the rifle for $180 and it drops recoil by 50% but incresses muzzle blast. i was thinking of putting one on a rifle for my 9yr old son because he cant hadle the recoil of any deer rifle i have but is whanting to go deer hunting.

RE: muzzlebrake?
A good muzzle brake will make a big diffenece in felt recoil.the bad thing is it does direct the muzzle blast back a little and is much louder.I found this sight that sells them

RE: muzzlebrake?
I have nothing against breaks, most good designs work well. It does increase muzzle blast and noise. I would skip the break and buy your son a gun of his own, maybe a NEF rifle in a smaller caliber, .243 should be managable for him and are reasonable in price. Just my suggestion, either way thanks for passing on the sport to our future! You are a fine American sir.

RE: muzzlebrake?
ya thanks my son doesnt like the recoil of his 410 so i dont know what to do?

RE: muzzlebrake?
here's a nice starter gun combo. http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/Vie...?Item=26644414
As for as recoil get a limbsaver slip-on recoil pad ,that will help out alot |
RE: muzzlebrake?
That is a tough spot then, most states .243 is the min. caliber I believe for deer, someone tell me if I am wrong please. I guess you wouldn't have much of a choice other than the break. The recoil pad will most likely make the pull too long for the youngster. There are several companies that incorperate a recoil reduction system, basically a break and a dead blow type device incorperated into the stock, they claim a major reduction but cost $$. I will find a few and post the links for you. Possibly a semi auto would help but they may be impossible to find in a youth size and still may require the break system if he is so recoil sensative. Best of luck.

RE: muzzlebrake?
usmc thanks for all the help. ya i dont have a lot of money. i tried the recoil pad but the pull was to long on his 410. i thought about cuting the stock down to accomodate for the pad what do you think about that?
|
RE: muzzlebrake?
Wait till he grows up a little. If he finds the recoil of a .410 too much don't force the issue you could turn him off or scare him with a high powerd rifle. In a few years I would get him a Rem .260 or a 7mm-08 these have plenty of power for deer and are light on the recoil. If you reload you can back them down even further , and still have lots of power for deer. Some things ae worth waiting for.

RE: muzzlebrake?
My son is 8 years old and is pretty small in stature. He shoots an NEF .243 win. I load reduced loads and the recoil is VERY light. 21 grs. of IMR-4198 under a 85 gr speer SP. It gets about 2100 fps and works very well inside 100 yds. (Personal limit) It scored him his first deer this year. No buffer material is needed. Groups of 1 1/2-2 inches normal at 100 yds.

RE: muzzlebrake?
I agree with Big Guy01, give him a couple of years to get used to recoil. If not, you could lose a future hunter/shooter and thats not worth taking a chance on. I was in the same boat as you with my nephew. My dad gave him a Winchester 37A .410 and after shooting it the first time, he wouldn't shoot it anymore. I spent hours and hours in the backyard with him trying to put into his head, "its going to kick ya, but it is not going to kill ya". He finally got it and the next thing I know, he's ready for anything. To me, its a mental thing. Good luck and give it time. If he wants to hunt that bad, he'll come around.

RE: muzzlebrake?
Just had a thought, a 30-30 barely kicks and they are fairly cheap, maybe an option.
|
RE: muzzlebrake?
how about a winchester model 94 timber in (450 marlin ) oops that one is for me:D:):D
|
RE: muzzlebrake?
USMC, the 30-30 is light on recoil, but if a 410 shotgun scares him, a 30-30 is out of the question too.

RE: muzzlebrake?
Cutting the stock on his .410 is an option but the gun will forever be "youth" sized unless you can replace the stock. If you have a fairly low cost single shot like the NEF I would cut it for him. It is fairly easy to get parts for them so later you could replace the cut stock with a full size. I would also at least talk to someone that has done this before, you do not want to change the angle of the butt. There is a book that you can pickup at the local WalMart for about $14 that will show you how to cut the stock properly, click the link below to view it. Good luck.

RE: muzzlebrake?
this is going to sound crazy but, a few years ago i wanted my nephew to go on a youth deer hunt, he also did not care for the single shot 410 too much, one day the neigbors grandkids are over and the wanted to shoot a little, not wanting to miss the chance to get some kid hooked on something i consider very positive and better than any stupid hand-held game, i broke out a 10/22 a h&r single shot 410, and when one of the boys mentioned he'd like to shoot a deer rifle, i brought out the wifes rem model 7 in 260 rem, all 4 of my neighbors grandkids shot all 3 guns and it basically shamed my nephew into shooting it before you knew it they all decided it wasn't that bad, kinda cool for them, they would shoot it and go "oh man" rub the shoulder for a second and be ready to shoot again faster than i could load, these boys ranged in age from 8-14 and my nephew was 10. to me its like paintball, yea it hurts a little [:@] but the adrenaline is so high you hardly notice it. best of luck and like other mentioned don't make him shoot or he could turn away or develop some poor shooting habits

RE: muzzlebrake?
Another thought for you. Remington chambers their model 7400 semi auto in 243. It should have hardly any recoil what so ever. Just a thought.

RE: muzzlebrake?
thanks to everyone for your input and help.:D i have 2 410's and one of them is a real cheap single shot. my dad is a machinest and is going to cut the stock and insall a packmier but pad. for my son. so that is taken care of.:) i was planing on taking him hunting with me and letting him carry his pellet rifle. so he will get used to hiking in the woods with a rifle. and lern from the experiance of being there with me. is this a good idea to let him take a pellet rifle?

RE: muzzlebrake?
My buddy's son is 8 years old and shoots a NEF in 243..he had to scale the loads down considerably as well as install a decelerator pad on the gun. It had the synthetic stock and we just cut to correct LOP and glassed in a piece of wood that fit the inside of the stock so we could screw the decelerator to it. Not pretty but it works

RE: muzzlebrake?
Night Hawk, I agree with a lighter caliber rifle compared to a muzzle brake. You should wear ear protection even while hunting with the brake. It's deafining and can cause hearing damage with only one shot in a confined area.;)
|
RE: muzzlebrake?
Night Hawk 223 has said that he is working on a tight budget, it wouldn't cost much to shorten the pull of the .410 and put a good recoil pad on it. I think OldElkHunter has a good point also I think you can pick one of those NEF rifles up still for under $200. A smaller caliber and possibly reduced loads. It's tough when on such a tight budget, been there myself.

RE: muzzlebrake?
My son carried a B-B gun with him on the last few hunts that we went on, before he took his first deer with his moms 243.
The 243 is a Ruger Compact SS Lam. Stock. Neat little rifle. I would have him practice with the muzzle brake on then when we took it to the stand I took the brake off and put the thread protector on. He never knew the differance. By the way. My son is 9 years old and may weigh 58 pounds. Just my two cents. hunter338 |
RE: muzzlebrake?
ok my dad cut 2" off the stock of his 410 and insalled a 1" but pad it fits him great now!:D i also bought him some 2 3/4 shells. because i relized all i had was 3" mags. now he is happy with it and i am going to take him rabbit hunting tomarow. with his custom fit 410;) i will let you all know how it goes when we get back. and thanks agian for every ones help and imput and i hope all of you heve a great xmas:)

RE: muzzlebrake?
NH123,
Great idea on th .410. I hope it works. I have one of those old singles and I think that it hurts like a MOFO when I shoot it. It's worse than shooting turkey loads out of my semiauto. It is so light and sharp kicking that I rarely shoot it. I think those old single shots are just like getting hit with a fence post. I would look at the Savage Acutrigger .243 for the young lad. I belive that the trigger will help him be accurate. Buy the heaviest one that he can carry. It will greatly reduce the felt recoil and he will grow into it. Then check out some low velocity ammo. Try to find a good 90gr load and don't worry about long shots over 150 yards. He may want to keep the range closer than that anyways. Heavy rifle+lower power ammo+good but pad+practice= good shooting. Merry Christmas! |
RE: muzzlebrake?
A lot of good advice was proffered. Personally, I'd stay away from the brakes after my own experience which resulted in my losing some hearing in my left ear due to the directed muzzle blast (even while I was wearing muffs and plugs).
