I feel the need for a new rifle. This will be for deer and antelope nothing bigger, my 7mm mag and .350 mag handle the heavyweights nicely. Would you go with a .25-06 or a .270? ..... One advantage that .25 would give is that its legal for varmint hunting near home while the .270 is not ..... Do you think there is a real advantage with the .270 vs .25-06 on mule deer size game when loading both with premiums?
I don't believe I'm saying this, but in this case I'd go with the 25-06. The 270Win., as previously noted, will handle larger game, but you don't need to be concerned about that
as you already have the 7mm Rem.Mag, and the 350Mag.(helluva' an elk cartridge there).
The 25-06 will handle antelope & mule deer out to 400yds with no problem. And, as varmint hunting seems to be a consideration for you, it is certainly a better choice for this application. Yep, go with the 25-06 :D

I own both the 270-winchester & 25-06-Remington. My favorite is the 25-06. You already have a 7mm & 350. I would suggest the 25-06. The 25-06 will be a legal varmint round also.

25-06. the 270 has a little advantage on bigger animals, but since you said thats not on the menu... the 25 also has some smaller bullets for varmits that really sceam.

I prefer both, .270 is my pet but the 25-06 has a lot of appeal. Refer to the quote below from Alsatian, it was directed toward the .243 but still applies to the .270 / 25-06 debate.

The following is a link to a deer kill study carried out at a hunting club.

http://www.scilowcountry.org/cedar_knoll_deer_study.htm

The study covers 493 deer. It found that their was no difference in effectiveness for killing deer between .30 cal, .284 cal, .270 cal, .25 cal, and .243 cal cartridges. Shot placement was found to be important. Soft bullets were found to be more effective than hard bullets.
Just the facts, looks like you can't loose either way.

RE: .270 or .25-06?

I disagree with the idea of the .270 win being too close to the 7 mag. i hunt with those 2 exact calibers most of the time. There's more than just power to think about. The .270 is in a much more compact rifle than the 7 mag. 22" vs. 26" for instance. I have a Browning SS .270 and Medallion in 7 mag and they handle very differently but both dispatch deer quite handily. Point: Feel of the rifle is at least as important as the caliber. Wind drift in the .270 is noticably less than the '06 also way out there. I'm basing that on my 140 BT vs. a friends 25/06 shooting 100gr speers. Just my experience.
