My Last Remington
After owning many many Remingtons I have had my fill. I bought a new 700 BDL SS 2 months ago in 7 Rem mag. It might be the most accurate remington I have owned to date. I didn't carefully check it out when I picked it up and the floorplate is loose. Believe it or not to get warranty work done on it I have to send the COMPLETE rifle back to Remington to get this floorplate replaced. I replaced the ISS wart with a normal bolt shroud/firing pin assembly and adjusted the trigger. Total cost of rifle so far is 670 dollars. I take it hunting this weekend and walk thru brush and Voila my buddy tells me the bolt is ope[:@]. DId I tell you about stock noise? New style synthetic stock they sell and it is the noisiest stock I have ever owned. A bongo drum would be quieter in the woods. Yes it is very accurate but boy are they(Remington) really missing the mark. I am sending this POS back to have the floorplate replaced and then it is going to be gone .

RE: My Last Remington
Olkelk, be careful, not to send back that gun with your adjusted trigger on it. they will pull off the "good" adjusted one and put on a standard 6lb trigger and then charge you for it. It happened to me. Better off just sending the gun without a trigger. Thats what Remington told me anyway.
I like this ADL I got in a 204 but price was right at 350 dollars. I am with you however. |
RE: My Last Remington
BC Iknow that's why they want the gun back to make sure the trigger is within specs to CTA. I'll screw the pull weight screw in and set it for 5 lbs and they should be happy. If I decided to keep the gun after this weekend experience I will have to spend mucho bucks for a Replacement Mcmillan and ULA safety and I still will own a Remington. I hope someone in their customer relations department looks at this site and sees my comments but I am not holding my breath.

RE: My Last Remington
My point exactly about the remingtons... Yes they have a reputation of being very accurate out of the box, but there are a lot of other variables to take in to affect...
Once you get a Remington to the specs you wish you are ussually in the 650+ range. I say start out with a Sako out of the box and shoot it, you won't find a smoother action and a well balanced gun. Also they guarantee their accuracy, something remington won't do. If there is one problem with the Sako it is weight... Which to me isn't very important. Sorry to hear about your experience Old Elk Hunter... |

RE: My Last Remington
Exactly...
Being young (and without a lot of resources) I have decided to make a list of guns I really want and go after them as I have the resources. I will use loner guns until I can get what I really want. I am currently hunting with a Browning A-bolt in 7mm-08, a very nice gun, but not my dream gun. I have shot many of my fathers guns and the one I love is his Sako 30-06, it is in a different league from the Win, Rem, Rugers, etc. He does have one pre-Garcia Winchester which is very nice, but a little on the worn side for me. He is currently looking at gettin the Blaser, so maybe I will inherit all the other guns, including the Sako! |
RE: My Last Remington
If you are looking to buy a rifle someday and haven't made up your mind, I recommend that you take a look at the CZ 550. These are rather inexpensive, priced comparable to Rugers, and also feature the Mauser claw extractor, single set adjustable trigger, and scope rings/mounts are included in the price. The one sample I have is a recently acquired 6.5x55, and out of the box it is unbelievably accurate. The walnut stock is not quite as dressy as some but is still very nice.
I just bought my first and second Remington 700 rifles this year, and next month will be taking my BDL .30-06 on a wild boar hunt. It is a wonderfully accurate rifle, but the Ruger I junked this weekend due to poor accuracy had some real nice features that I will miss, especially the controlled feed. I'll have to keep an eye out for the bolt snagging on the shrubbery and opening at an inopportune time. |
RE: My Last Remington
yeah, that mauser claw extractor is real nice... Kimber uses it as well.
I have looked at the CZ's but they are not nearly as smooth as I would want out of my "perfect" gun. Don't get me wrong I beleive they are the best deal out there. One other problem I have is on some of them they have the magazine extending out of the bottom of the stock, I think it is the 550 line, but could be wrong. |
RE: My Last Remington
I have had tons of 700 Remingtons. Not one problem of any kind. Not one malfunction. They have been perfect for me.
|
RE: My Last Remington
You do have a point on smoothness; once in a while the bolt on my CZ will catch on the follower when the magaizine is empty, instead of smoothly sliding over. I haven't had this long enough to hunt with yet, only to play at the range twice, so I haven't formed all the opinions I am likely to form just yet.
Still, this rifle compares very favorably with the Remingtons, Winchester and Ruger that I have owned, and I would recommend that anyone on the market for a good rifle have a look at them. RE: My Last Remington
Sorry to hear you were un happy Old Elk. I to have owned a couple of 700's and have enjoyed them. I just purchased a 700BDL SS in 30-06 and the out of box acuracy is hard to beat. The stock is noisier than my 76 chev though! Where I hunt is mostly on the tops of draws so sound isn't a problem but for dense cover i would pick a differant rifle for sure!

Ahhhhhhhhh patience grasshoppah...
BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG things it happenin for Big Green in 05. Lets just say that most everything is gettin "changed" and from what I have knowledge of, I doubt you will be sayin this this same time nextyear!!! Lemme just say you SAUM owners are gonna be disappointed, RA |

RE: My Last Remington
I would have to say I agree with you. There was a time when I only owned Remington's. That time has passed. In my opinion the Howa 1500/Weatherby Vanguard is a better rifle that offers the same features. The Vanguard even comes with an accuracy guarantee. The new Savage's with the Accu-trigger are also better rifles for the money. I say this because if you buy a Savage synthetic model the stock is pillare bedded and the trigger is great. In the past when I have picked up a Rem. I usually had to float the barrel, adjust the trigger, and glass bed the action. The Rem. synthetic stocks that come the ADL & BDL models are complete tupperware junk. If you buy one of these you need to throw the stock away and go the McMillan, H-S Precision, or one of the other manufacturers of quality fiberglass. My next purchase will be a Savage in 300 WSM. I also think the firearms from Browning & Winchester are superior to what Remingon is producing at this time. It has been known for the last few years that Rem. has loosened up on quality. I hope they get their act together and come back to the top of the industry. I will not sale the Remingon's that I currently own. One is a late 70's gun and its fit and finish are great and it's a true 1/2" gun with my handloads. I also have a 700 Classic Stainless in 257 Roberts that is accurate. My complaint on the rifle is the amount of tooling marks on it. The gun doesn't look like they spent anytime trying to polish it after production. Looks crude but it shoots well. This is just my opinion.

RE: My Last Remington
I haven't owned a Remington 700 in a couple of years now and have no plans to buy another. Since I started buying Sakos, the 700 just doesn't cut it for me anymore. I'm also partial to Model 70 Winchesters, both the current classic models and the pre-64 versions. I just think a rifle ought to offer more than just accuracy alone.
|
RE: My Last Remington
I called Remingtons customer service line and they now don't require my rifle to fix the floorplate. They sent me a brand new assembly in very fast time. I had to fit the latch properly with a file but was very impressed with the service provided. I am now pleased with the rifle now if they would only do away with the ISS I would be happier

RE: My Last Remington
I'm sorry to hear about your problem with your new rifle oldelkhunter and i hope you get it resolved. I guess i've been very lucky too because same as James, i've owned quite a few Remingtons myself and i haven't had not one problem at all with any of them. I will add though that my newest Remington is a Classic 25.06 made in 1990 so i'm not familiar with their newer guns. I currently have 4 but if Remington ever decides to chamber a (260 rem or 6mm:D) in a rifle i like then i have no doubt i'll try out their newer rifles and own number 5 & 6. Good luck with your new rifle.

RE: My Last Remington
Man, what is your deal? He explained his reasons. Obviously, you need to go up and buy some other guns to form an opinion. Oldelk didn't say a dad gone thing about you.

Looks like we have a newbe with an attitute. You need to learn to respect people instead of insulting them. We've seen your type come and go.OEH is a fine person and deserves to be respected. This is the wrong way to start off at a new site.If you can't respect members here it's time for you to move else where.

RE: My Last Remington
OEH Sorry to hear the troubles you've had with the new Remington.I have two Rem rifles left (700-760) and there won't be anymore.I'll stick with my Ruger's. When there is a rare occasion that something is wrong Ruger stands behind their products.I've never paid for any Ruger Repair. They just about rebuilt a 10 + year old Redhawk at N/C.Never a hassel with their Customer Service or service dept for that matter.Of course it helps when you know people in the right places.Remington would be allot better off if they followed in Ruger's footsteps.Remington has really slipped over the last several years.I would like to see them like the old Remington was but I doubt that will ever be seen again. They are losing old customers constantly.

RE: My Last Remington
What is your problem. Remington is the best gun ever made. Perhaps you should just grow up a little bit and get a few years under your belt and a little bit of experiance before you start popping off at the mouth. I know I won't buying any Remingtons either. My experience with their customer service was crap and they will not be getting any more of my money. Sorry to hear about your troubles. Glad to see that it was resolved though. Hopefully Red Allison's information is correct and they get their act together cause they will be in trouble eventually if they keep building products like they are and with their current customer service. |

870 it looks like you are making alot of enemies fast. Close your mouth bud before you screw up some more. Im not old by any means...Im 25, but I am wise enough to know what respect is and you aint given or gettin it man. These guys have probably hunted longer than you have been alive and shot more guns than you ever will, so before you mess things up with them even worse use their experiences and LEARN somethin.
sorry guys, i apologize FOR him...all newbies arent like that. |
RE: My Last Remington
Agreed. I'm still a Moderator on a paintball forum, and I was for a while also a Mod for a motorcycle forum at the same time (it became too much, very time consuming). A word of advice, when you first come on a forum, SEARCH and READ, A LOT! Also, respect others.
Little guideline: would you tell that person what you're typing to their face? Then don't type it and hide behind a screen, that's cowardice. I'm a newbie here, and I have learned a lot by reading, searching and asking specific questions that are well formulated so I get good answers. These guys have gobs of knowledge and experience, draw on that, don't turn them against you. |
RE: My Last Remington
I'm guessing that The870 is probably about 14 years old, maybe an immature 16, and has clearly demonstrated that he's not worth talking to, and I for one won't be wasting my time offering my advise to his questions until he learns to respect others and treat them as he would like to be treated.
870, I don't personally know oldelkhunter, but I've been around this board for awhile and know that here he is an upright guy. I also know that he's not ignorant about firearms like you appear to be judging from you other posts, so you have to have a lot more balls than brains to call him an idiot when you can't even figure out how to zero a rifle. http://forum.hunting.net/asppg/tm.as...1&key=󑚂 Mike |
RE: My Last Remington
Good point Gator it is cowardice...never thought of it that way.

ORIGINAL: driftrider I'm guessing that The870 is probably about 14 years old, maybe an immature 16, Not to start anythng driftrider but im 15 and dont think your coment is fair to people in that agegroup that havnt mouthed off at anybody for no good reason. And in response to 870 remington makes a nice gun but i dont think you can say any one gun is better than all the rest. Also it was not very nice to insult old elk for such a stupid reason. Thats all i got to say so peace yall |
RE: My Last Remington
My comment was not meant to say that all 14-16 years olds here are immature, obnoxious brats, but rather that the immature obnoxious brats are generally 14-16 years old.
No offense was intended toward the younger but well behaved members of the board. Mike |
RE: My Last Remington
Unfortunately The870 has made a lasting impression. One we could all do without.:(

RE: My Last Remington
Well just to chime on on this....I have 4 700 Rem's..number 5 is on the way. I have had ZERO probs with any of them and 3 of the 4 group great with cheap ammo. In fact my 270 adl (nothing but a trigger adjustment) with the TUPPERWARE stock will conistently group inside 2 inches at 200 yards with a Tasco 2x7 World Class scope and Federal Classic 130 gr ammo. I can only hope you guys have as good of service as I have had from Team Green.
|
RE: My Last Remington
I have since purchased another 700 albeit a used older Classic so I am not entirely down on them. I really like them but I would like to see some changes in their product as well. I just feel for what they charge for their new models that one can spend a few more dollars or in some cases spend less and get just as good or in some cases a superior product.
|
RE: My Last Remington
I would be happy if they would just change their extraction to a M16 style. Oh, and change the trigger guard to metal of some sort. Also, a three lug design would be nice but not entirely necessary. Also wouldn't cost much to actually glass bad from the factory. I mean browning does and it seems to work.
|
RE: My Last Remington
If I had to categorize every problem I have had with the 700's I own it would fall into probably only 3 areas
1.Triggers 2.Safety 3.Quality control overall ( I have an example below) One custom shop 700 I purchased would not extract a fired factory Federal round without hitting the bolt with a rubber mallet to open it. I got the rifle back 3 months later. How in the world could they have proof fired it and not found that out before they shipped the POS? If I buy any more it will be old ones until they clean up their act |
RE: My Last Remington
I've owned 5 model 700's , all BDL's as I'm a lefty. The newest is a short action .243 purchased about 2 months ago. It's fine for it's intended purpose. As usual the trigger was atrocious. My complaint is Big Green claims they cater to the lefty crowd and I guess they do as long as you want a .270, '06, 7 mag or 300 mag. Now...the only stainless offered is in the UM cartridges. What's up with that? I have a Browning Stainless Stalker coming as I sit here and complain about the Green Monster. I like Remington b/c of the available aftermarket accessories for left-hand rifles....stocks, etc. But still not as accurate as my Medallions....sorry Remington. :(
|
RE: My Last Remington
I cant argue with the trigger part..they were all pretty terrible when I got em..but it is an easy fix. Thats the first thing I'm gonna do to the new one. If they would work as hard at to get back to where they were quality wise as Savage has to get out of the doghouse they would be unstoppable.
|
RE: My Last Remington
What is your problem. Remington is the best gun ever made. Since you are a old elk hunter your old eyes must be going bad and you must have ordered a red ryder bb gun you idiot. RE: My Last Remington
Why does remington , winchester , etc have their factory trigger set so HIGH. 6-7lbs is way to high. My Abolt Medallion came with a 4 lb crisp trigger. I think they should not set it any higher than that.
