Just wondering what everybody's primary hunting gun will be this year??? Mine will be my 98 mauser 8 x 57 with 200 grain partition handloads topped with a 3-9x40 Elite 3200.

Ruger .338 with 225 grain Accubonds.....took out a deer nicely...little big for deer but I was elk hunting and did not have time to change loads......

Remington 7600 Synthetic 30-06. Simmons 6X40 scope. 150 Grain Federal factory loads Speer Grand Slam bullets. This is for deer. For bigger game, same gun and scope 180 grain hand load Nosler Partitions. Second deer season Browning A Bolt stalker 308. Hand loaded 150 grain Nosler Partitions. Third season T/C woods rifle 50 caliber muzzle loader. 300 grain Hornady XTP's. Peep sight. The Browning has a very old Redfield 2x7 tracker scope. I have had it for thirty years. Still works perfect.

Hmmmm....

Probably my Marlin 30-30 with 170gr Remington core-lokt rounds. Or, I could try to get closer with my Remington 870 Express 12GA and slugs or 00 Buck.

Remington 700ml inline muzzle loader with a 3x9 bushnell. The load is 95 grns of 777 fffg and 350 grn Precision Bullets. It's 2.5 inches high at 80 yards and 3 inches low at 150 which is my max shot where I hunt.

I live in southern MI by the way, no centerfire rifles allowed. Other wise I would probably get a H&R .243 instead.

I'll be hunting deer mostly in shotgun-only zones, so my primary gun is an 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge with rifled slugs. I expect to break out the 700 ADL .30-06 and my grandpa's Springfield 03A3 on a couple of hunts, though.

I'm using a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in .243 shooting 100 grain Winchester power point cartridges for pronghorn antelope and Oklahoma deer. I bagged a pronghorn doe and will be after a buck and a doe whitetail in Oklahoma in about 10 days.

My son used a .25-06 custom based on a Springfield action to take his pronghorn buck and will use a .30-30 Winchester Model 94 rifle for Oklahoma buck whitetail. He is going to be using 170 grain Winchester Super-X cartridges.

The .243 and .25-06 are both topped with a Leupold VariX-III 3.5-10x 40 mm scope.

T/C Encore 15" pistol in 308 topped with a Nikon 1.5-5X. Loaded with a Winchester Fail Safe in 150gr. Will also be packing a Encore 308 rifle for shots over 200yds.(not likely, but possible) That barrel is topped with a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9X40 shooting 150gr Federal Premium. Our gunseason comes in this weekend and the rut is very close!!! We've got a front coming in and its supposed to cool down for the weekend.[8D]

Krieghoff 16x16x 8x57jrs drilling loaded with 200 grain NP's, and is scoped with a B&L 1x6 in claw mounts.

It just keeps on filling the freezer, no matter what i point it at!!!

This year's rifle will be my new Remington 700 BDL .30-06. I'll be using handloads, a 165 grain Remington CoreLokt in front of 49.8 grains of IMR 4064, Winchester cases and Federal 210 primers. Going for wild boar.

I did not hunt last year, but 2002's rifle was my Winchester Model 70 Featherweight .243, handloaded with 37 grains IMR 4064 and a 100 grain Hornady Spire Point. Took a doe.

In 2001 I used a Ruger M77 MkII .30-06 with handloads similar to the ones I'll be using this year. Took a boar and a doe. I am retiring my Ruger from service until I resolve the accuracy problems I am having; one group will be tighter than tight, the next 3.5", same everything.[:@]

Next year I will use my shiny new CZ 550 in 6.5x55 Swede. This is the sweetest rifle I have ever owned. Might need one in 7x57 someday!;)

Nice to compare American hunters gear with our Europeans gear.
It seems that we both use same kind of rifles. Sako seems to be widely in use in America as the remington is in use in europe. One thing that I have been thinking is that in America you don't use drillings much? Why??? I think they could be very useful for example turkey hunting? Also with right caliber they can be good with deers.

I use in the moose hunting my Sako 300 WM with Accubond. Scope is smidt & bender 1-6x

With small game (capellairce) I use drilling cal12/222 (sauer&sohn) with sako & rottweil ammo. Scope is removable zeiss 4x.

Please answer me about the drillings. There must be some simply explanation.

Season ended Nov. 5th here but, I used a Win. Featherwieght in 257 Roberts/3x9x Leupold VX2 and a handload consisting of a Sierra 120gr bullet/ RL22 powder/WLRprimer/RP case. This gun is a pleasure to shoot and a pleasure to tote around. The best thing about it tho is it makes no noise and has no recoil when you shoot a deer with it :D

I have wondered why more drillings aren't used here. I have a Savage .30-30/20 guage that I haven't shot in over 10 years and JP Sauer & Sohn, Suhl (16X16X8x57) I haven't shot in 10 years either. I don't care for bird hunting and a single shot .30-30 isn't very useful to me.

The engraving on the JP Sauer is so nice I am afraid to bring it in the field, and while the 8x57 is a good caliber, I have better ones and can't bring myself to put a scope on it. Then there is still the single shot issue...

This year, CZ550 Safari in 416 Rigby w/325 gr Barnes X @ 2900fps, Leupold VariX III 3.5x10, appeared to work nicely on elk....

Last year, a M70 Supergrade in 375 H&H w/ 300gr Partitions, Leupold 4x12, seemed to do fine on elk.

Neither case involved taking Central Nervous System shots. Just aimed for the middle of "high probability" zone (heart lung area) and if bones get in the way, then so be it and bones get busted up. Neither shot was perfect-perfect but seemed effective (notice no mention of the "bullet placement" myth). In each case, it was a one shot season and involved no tracking. Walk to the point of impact and start field dressing. Kinda the way I like it.

Next year, hard telling what the rifle/cartridge will be; however, it is unlikely I will go with any of the "standard" cartridges for elk. It will be a scoped bolt action rifle though.

I think the above "iS" the reason no one wants to use a drilling in the woods, BUT, it "doesn't" bother me to do so, i bought it to use, not be a parade queen!!!

Heck, i see guys buying pickups (pu) around here and getting them all "yuppied" up, just to take them to the most dangerous place on earth!!! OUR HIWAYS!!! And, they have $35, to $45,000.00 in them!!!! hahahahaaa Some even take them where i take my drilling!!!!

I bought a NEW pu some years ago and paid over $26,000.00 for it, and in a couple more years my drilling will be worth more than my pu, and there both used!!! I should have bought more drillings instead!!! :>)

Take your drilling hunting, enjoy it!!! Lifes too short to try and save it for some one else!!!

BTW, how many shots does it take to kill an animial???????? It's been takeing me ONE each, now for a long long time, i save the rest of my ammo for the range!! I call it PRACTISE!!!

Secretly, I expect you are right...

The Sauer was built just after WWI, and I would love to hear the stories it has to tell. It is in spectacular condition.

Additionally, now that you mention it, I have not ever taken a second shot at a big game animal. Your point is well taken.

What I need is a .416x.416x12 gauge!
