Default What Cal. do u think might fit the bill?

I hear alot of the well it is a VARMIT cal. in alot of these post.

But to be blunt. To me any small bore cal is considered a VARMIT cal. As in the 222, 223, 243, and the 270 calibers.

Am I in the wroung?? Or is it people think that from a 243 up to a 270 cal. That these cals. were for larger game than a coyote?

I have always been under the impression that they were VARMIT CALS. (SMALL BORE)

Just wanting to know.

Hold on to your hat, better buckle the chin strap! [My sentiments to some degree!]

The 22 cals. IMO are to small for deer & are varmit rounds.
243's are the starting point for deer sized game with proper bullets. Also doubles as a varmit round.
I use a 25.06 for varmits with 87-90g. bullets & 120g. bullets for deer sized game. IMO one of the better deer rounds.
270's shoot a heavier bullet than the 25.06 at just slower speeds and also is not just a varmit round.

Best Wishes

I have a Savage 116 in the 7mm-08 that I use for woodchucks PAST 600 yards! Depends on how far the shot's will be,I also shoot chucks 200 yards and under with a T/C Encore 15", .223...

well i know the 270 is to small for squirrels!! everytime i shoot at one it just disappears!!!! man i think i am hitting them just not getting the penatration[:'(]

anything 243 and up is a good deer round. however a lot of smaller deer rounds are great all around guns for coyotes and deer

last year a 12 or 13 year old kid killed a 650 or 700 pound bear with a single shot from a 243 so i wouldn't consider the 243 a VARMIT cal.

did you ever hear of Jack O' Conner and the 270??? read up on him buddy!! or Roy Weatherby and the 257 wby.

ps: i am buying a 510 nitro for the upcoming deer season and a 340 wby. mag for the late squirrel.......that damn 270 just dosen't cut it!!!

I have seen deer taken with every "small" caliber you mentioned. They may be small, but they sure seem deadly. I consider the .222 and .223 to be on the small side for deer, but the .243, .257, 25-06, and .270? My uncle has had great success elk hunting with a .270.

Nice theory, Killer243! We all know how vicious those squirrels can be when you tick them off with an underpowered rifle.

killer,

JOC, yep HAVE heard of him. Has quite the fan club here in the lower 48; however, not everyone belongs to it though. [FWIW, he did use a 416 Rigby for the serious stuff in Africa.]

510 nitro? HAVEN'T heard of that one. Must be a wildcat.

An excellent choice for Pronghorn too, extremely flat shooting with plenty of wallop for deer size game to 300 yards, with very mild recoil now thats my kind of gun, an all around gun if you will.
