I have a thompson encore and had virgin valley make me a 26" match grade s/s barrel for it chambered for the weatherby 270.It shoots awesome, I need some info on ammo for this cal. I dont reload so i will be useing factory weatherby ammo for deer hunting. My shots are 25-125 yards. I love big entrance and exit holes, I try and shoot a buck in the shoulder if at all possible. I know weatherby offers a 130gr hornady soft point, a 130gr partition, 140gr barnes, a 140gr ballistic tip, and a 150gr hornady and partition bullet. What do you recommend? I was leaning towards the 140gr ballistic tip.Does anyone have this cal. and hunt with it, would like some info on how it does in the field?

It will perform just like the 270 Winchester. Out to 300 yards you would see no difference. I would use the heaviest bullet I could find for shots that close.

I owned a Winchester Model 70 XTR Sporter chambered for 270 Weatherby Magnum. My rifle liked the 150 gr. Partition loaded by Weatherby. My handloads were 72 gr. H4831 behind a Sierra 130 gr. SPBT. I also shot some of the 130 gr. ballistic tips with H4831. The 130's were very accurate. I didn't like there performance on deer. I had two of the B-tips blow up on shoulder shots at under 100 yards. I switched over to the 150 partition in handloaded form and this took care of the problem. The rest of my shoulder shots were complete pass thru's. I like taking a shoulder shot and putting the animal down on the spot.
