RE: Which Gun 30-06 or .270
I would go with the 06. It's a great versatile round. If you were using it for deer solely, the.270 would be a good choice, however, the .06 would do a better job stopping the bears.

Have the best of both calibers and get a Rem280! A good flat shooting rifle that carries the power of 30-06. Load it with Federal 150gr NoslerPartion and you'll a deer dropping bear stopping gun:D

RE: Which Gun 30-06 or .270
Joe D. nailed it. I prefer the .30-06 for its versatility across the spectrum of american game animals, but the .270 is a great deer cartridge. It's ballistics are a little better because of the lighter bullets, yet the ammo choices give you plenty of room to work with against whitetails and mulies.
But if you're looking to go after a few bears on the side, stick with the .30-06. It's better to get more gun than you need right now than to buy a whole other rifle down the road. |

ok well see if i did happen to get a bear perment i can use my dads browning 06 or my grandpas 06 and if i was gonna go with the 270 would it stop a bear if i wanted it to i mean it is gonna be mostly for deer so that is why i am confused about this whole thing oh and also what brand should i go with i found a nice savage for like 400 but i also found a weatherby (spellin) for 489 also how hard is it to find shells for the 270

RE: Which Gun 30-06 or .270
There is no black bear that will tell the difference when soaking up a .270 or .3006 round to the vitals. I have killed many blackies and they are not the monsters they are made out to be. You sound like a young lad starting out and asking questions which is great. Get the .270 that you prefer and don't worry about bears, just shoot em and they will die just like a deer. Just use a 150 gr bullet and a premium is better yet. I would take the weatherby over Savage but there is nothing wrong with the Savage, just my opinion. also check out the Tikka.

lil,
Go ahead and buy the one that makes you happy, BUT be aware.... The salesman IS right --- the 30-06 is more versatile --- even the "god" of the 270, Jack O'Connor agreed the 30-06 was more versatile. Your relatives with all the 30-06's may have figured this out long ago. I understand wanting to be different.... Even so, personally, I'd go for the 30-06! A great place to start is with a 22LR, a 12 gauge, and a 30-06. |

LilBuck, I too have used both rounds and like them both very well. It is just as easy to find ammo for one as the other. Both of them are among the top five choices most anywhere you hunt in the country.

RE: Which Gun 30-06 or .270
Both are more than enough gun for deer and blk bear. "If" you REALLY want the 270 Win., then get it!!! Personally, i never cared for the 270 Win., but there's sure nothing wrong with it for a deer and blk bear round!
In 30-06, use 150 or 165 grain on deer, and 165 or 180 on blk bear. In the 270 Win., use 130's or 150's on deer, and 150's on blk bear. You have to make YOU happy, so get the one you REALLY want!! Drilling Man |
