Can't speak for the magnum, but I did buy a 597 in 22lr. I got it for squirrel hunting. It was the jamminest gun I've ever seen.
I couldn't empty the gun with out a jam.

One word sums up the 597. JUNK! The guns jam frequently. The trigger is very heavy and is not adjustable. There is too much plastic in the trigger linkage. I have no idea what Remington was thinking on this. Well, probably the same thing they were thinking with the 710. If you are stuck on semi-auto for some reason, get a 10/22. If you like a bolt, check out Marlin. Marlins are well built, inexpensive and highly accurate.

597's are great guns, I will sell you mine.
the only reason I'm keeping it, unless you want it of course, lol. is because it was the first gun I bought myself, and I didn't do much research before I bought it. OH well it works for me I guess. but I would go with a 10/22 because of the accessories and such for it.

Jlk,
Not many guys on this site like the 597's. I love mine. I have the 22 Magnum HB. With the correct ammunition, it will drive tacks at 100yds.. Ammo is the big key. Like any other gun in the world you have to find the one that your's likes the best. The CCI hollow point 40gr. shoot and cycle the best through mine. Federal and Remmington shells jam in mine.

jlk welcome to the board. To answer your question about the 597 Mag.I have never heard much said about it that was good. Most have complained about jamming and a very poor trigger assembly. If you want a semi auto 22 mag go with the Ruger 10/22 mag. There are some good 22 mag bolt actions out there to check into.Ruger make a M 77/22 in 22 mag. Ruger Redhawk
