Default .22 or .17??

Well I am eagerly waiting for Friday, pickup day for my Model 94 30-30 and I am now thinking about rounding out my collection with a small caliber rifle. I figure I need to complete the collection for hunting north America, right now my cabinet consists of the following.

Remington 788 .308
Winchester 1200 12 guage

OO0000ps I hit accidently enter before finishing my post

Remington 870 20 guage
Winchester 94 30-30
Ruger Mini 30 7.63X39
Taurus .357
Smith and Wesson Sigma 9mm

I now need a small caliber rifle for small game, what do you guys think? I am partial to lever guns. I am interested in the .17 caliber but have read some reviews that other than target shooting it is a worthless round and I am not into varmit shooting. Another thing to consider is that I will be moving to East Texas in a year or two. I value all opinions. Thanks

If you are talking about the 17HMR then no, it is not worthless for small game as long as you use the right bullet. If you are wanting a gun more for small game though a good 22 LR would be the ticket.

I'd say .22lr. cost of ammo is my main concern. If the .17m2 ever comes out it might make the .17 hmr obsolete

If you are not talking about long range hunting I would choose the 22 Rimfire without a doubt. If you want to shoot past 70 yards or so then the 17 HRM or 22 Magnum would be a better choice. The 17 HMR would be best past 100 yards. I don't care much for them because I want to reload my longer range varmit or small game rounds. I am Cheap.

Has the 22 LR made the 22 Mag obsolete yet? I think not.

Yeah, I'm with above on the Mach2 not replacing the .17hmr. Personally I think the only reason .17m2 exist is for pistols.

the .17m2 is out, and is not designed to replace the HMR. they are two totally different rounds with different capacities.
