Default Need help on a new rifle

What would be the best rifle for deer and coyote. I would like to buy a rifle that I can hunt both critters. I am not a big rifle hunter because most of my hunting is in a shotgun zone in mn. Give me different rounds and models. I would like to have the stainless heavy barrel. Min cal. in MN is .23 cal for deer, I think. Thanks for your replys.[&:]

sounds to me like you need a 243 winchester. this is a coyote and deer killing machine! when used with the proper bullets there couldn't be a better gun for what you want!

as for the gun itself i can't help you much there i always get the skinny barreled lightweight guns. however you can look at these sites and get a better idea to what you want
savagearms.com
remington.com
ruger-firearms.com
cz-usa.com
browning.com
sako.com
winchester.com

all of these companys make good rifles. the savage is prob. going to be the cheapest and will prob. shoot the best but let me be the first to tell you it isn't a pretty looking gun

remington has been putting out good guns year after year. i like there model 7 the best. all the 700's are good rifles. however the 710 is a peice of junk don't even look at it or it might break.

ruger makes good guns and they come in about every caliber. however you only need the 243 this also has the 3 position safty like a winchester

i have been hearing good things about the CZ's however the safty is backwards and the bolt throw can hit a larger scope.

browning has been making good guns and still are nice small bolt throw. well crafted rifles

sako is a great gun but it will cost you a pretty penny however on that site you can go to tikka rifles these are made by sako and are very good at about half the price.

winchester makes nice rifles and people either love them or hate them. i have a winchester featherweight classic in 243 and love it! it has a 3 position safty that is REALLY nice to have smooth action and easy handling.

i don't have much experince on each and every brand and this is just a basic run down however the ones that intrest you others on this board and myself will be more the happy to tell you every thing we know on the rifle/caliber

good luck!

25/06 would get my vote. I have one in a Win classic and have had good luck with it. 243 is also good I have one in a custom gun But I would choose 25/06 over the 243 for deer ...

The 25-06 is a lot more gun for deer and will double well as a varmit rifle. It will work great for both with 100 grain bullets. No need to resight.

i agree 25-06 is a good gun however it will be hard to find a bullet that won't blow up a coyotes hind to bad. a 243 can make a mess w/o the right shells.

either one is a good choice

243 would get my vote its a great little gun at can take down game as big as moose as long as your a good shot. mY dad uses one for every from moose to deer. it dosent make a mess of yotes either. there a pic of a yote that go shot in the face with one. its just a small hole with no exit.

I bought a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight .243 back in 1995, just before they introduced the Classic action with the Mauser claw extractor. After I floated the barrel and lightened the trigger pull, this became one of the sweetest little rifles I've ever shot. I took a deer with it two years ago. Never shot a coyote, but my guide whacked one with his .243 as he and I were hauling out a wild boar that I had shot with my .30-06. It was running, and he knocked that coyote into next week, one of the prettiest shots I ever saw.

If your deer aren't huge the .243 would work fine for you. The .25-06 might also be very good, although I have no experience with this round, and .243 ammo is easier to find (in case you do not reload.)

I have both the 243 Win and the 25-06 Rem in the Ruger m-77 mark II and use both for deer and varmint . All I can say is anyone that thinks they are marginal for deer , more than likely has never used one . More practice will correct marginal shooting not a bigger gun . Hal
