A good friend of mine has a mini-14 and he claims that it is very accurate. I think you can pick up used mini's fairly cheap.

I've never seen an accurate out of the box Mini-14. Two coworkers of mine brought their Mini's to my range last year and couldn't even come close to what my 38 year old Romanian SKS can do, let alone my AR-15. If semiautomatic .223's are desired, then spend the $550 or so and build a decent AR-15 CAR.

I've had one good one and two that were so-so in the accuracy dept. But that was 14 years ago. I don't know if this has is anything to do with it but the accurate one was blued and the other 2 stainless.

"Lord, make me fast and accurate."

I've had my Mini since 1985 and it's a great plinkin gun. I've put a major dent in the turtle population. But that's at 50 yards and closer. At 100 and 150 yards, I can hit human paper targets but they are all over the place.
The one thing I'll say about my Mini is that it has NEVER misfired or malfuntioned EVER!

I know that my SKS isn't the most accurate gun on the line, but I do know that it'll whoop the pants off every mini-30 I've seen. I can't say much about the mini-14, but I hear it's as bad or worse than the 30. If you want a .223, get a AR-15, if you want a .30, get an SKS. Either can be made to knock your socks off really easily, and they shoot a heck of a lot more accurately stock than the rugers do. I'll admitt to that, and I LOVE RUGERS!!!!

The Minis are poor, unless extensively worked over by someone who knows how to accurize them. The process usually requires a new barrel.

I've had a Mini 30 for 2 years now and if I had read some of these comments about it I probably would have not purchased one. A friend of mine had a Mini 14 that I found to be very accurate at 100 yards with just using the peep sights (3 inch groups). I can shoot 2 to 3 inch groups with my Mini 30 at 100 yards using a 3X9 scope. I can shoot it almost as well with the peep sights but I had over 20 years of experience using peep sights in the Army and I've come to prefer them over other types of sights. I have never shot a SKS or AK-47 that could shoot very well. I ran through the jungle for 2 years in Southeast Asia and I had many a AK take a shot at me and I'm still here. I think the good Lord had a lot to do with that though. Buy American!!!
