They're all back up to my 300 Ultra Mag. Long as whore's dream and heavy as a '65 Lincoln, the RUM can git 'r done when the chips are down.

There's no replacement for displacement when you're dealing with the wind in Kansas and deer that at first glance look the size of a quarter horse.

Seriously though, I haven't scoped the .280 yet and I don't feel comfortable not putting in a good bit of time behind a brand new rifle before season, I just ordered an Encore .45 cal muzzleloader and a Leupy for it, so I don't really have the cash now either. I won't have tons of time this year, I'm leaving for work in a couple of weeks and I won't be home until the middle of November, so I'll stick with old faithful for my Kansas hunt and try to use the .280 next year, hopefully on some caribou if things work out.

tanzian: I know what the differences are between the 280 and 270 cases. All I said was they were practically the same. Are you trying to tell me that if I shoot an elk with a 160 partition in the 280 compared to a 150 partition in the 270 that the elk will know the difference? Assuming identical and accurate shot placement. It's WHERE you hit them. WITH a good bullet. Barnes makes a 180 .277" bullet. I can't find the S.D. on it right now. I believe there are more bullet weights and styles available in .284" than .270" but there are plenty of .277" bullets available for whatever the cartridge is suited for. Personally I think the only PRACTICAL field advantage the 7 mags. have over the 270 or 280 is a little less wind drift.

jeffk - that small difference in diameter WILL make a difference, trust me. A 308, while not a ballistic god will drop animals MUCH better than a 7mm, 270, 243,250ect under 200 yds. the small bullets fly flatter, allowing you to hit better at long range.

pkfd7535,
If your looking for a good factory loaded round for the .280 try Hornady Light Magnum. Not sure what game your after, but if your after game from deer to elk these will work great. they are loaded with 139 grain SST. They cost a little more but the price is well worth it. They have increased veocities without the increase in pressure. Very good groups from my Ruger MKII. The best price I found was in Natchez shooters supply. Every deer and elk I shot with this round has dropped in it's tracks with the exception of one deer. That one took three steps and nose dived. Penetration was never an issue, complete pass-thru on every shot. Great wound channels.
