RE: Which Scope?
Have a chance to buy a Bushnell 3200 3-9x40 "floor model" at a local gun shop for $152, is that a deal? Sounds good to me. I have a 3-9x50 Bushnell on my favorite rifle and have had great service from this Bushnell and the Bushnell before it, purchased in 1968, now rests on a grandson's rifle (NEF 30-30)

RE: Which Scope?
i would like to have a Leupold or a Zeiss, but i'll have to settle for a bushnell when i get a new one, the others are too expensive. I have the cheap tasco for my .17HMR
|
RE: Which Scope?
I don't know if it's b/c I wear glasses or not, but I can't seem to get comfortable and into my scope unless I have at least 3.75" of eye relief. For that reason, I'm slowyly replacing all my scopes with Leupolds since their the only one that consistently provides that length of eye relief in a package I can afford.
|
RE: Which Scope?
I have 3 Bushnel's and all have served me well. All varible powers that hold a consistant point of aim at all powers. Yes there may be better scopes but if the difference in costs meant 1 less hunting trip I would not be further ahead.
Good Hunting |
RE: Which Scope?
Sightron S1 3-9+40 on a encore 50 cal. B.P.

RE: Which Scope?
I have a Remington 700BDL 30.06 topped with a Simmons Aztec 44 Mag scope. Never had a single problem with it. Clear and never fogs.

RE: Which Scope?
Wow... I am surprised no one has mentioned Swift. I love my Swift scopes and been using them for years. They have the BEST warrenty out there... Unlike Leupold, you do not have to send one back. You can exchange them over the counter at any authorized Swift dealer worldwide. I have not ever had to do that yet and I now own 14 swifts.

RE: Which Scope?

RE: Which Scope?
I tell people to search ebay for a used Leupold. Yes they are expensive, but they are very much worth it. The thing with a Leupold is they all have a lifetime warranty. You buy one scope to last you the rest of your life. The resale is also good compared to almost any other brand.
If you sight in a Leupold it will stay that way until you switch to a different ammo. It's comical watching guys with bargain scope sight in every year. When eactly do these scopes lose there zero? I sight in every year but have never found my zero to be off with a Leupold scope. Again, they will cost more but you get what you pay for. You should be able to find one for around $200.00-$250.00 new. Look for a VXII, you don't need to buy the VX-III. Natchez shooting supply usually has some prett good deals. I like ebay because if there is a problem you just send to Leupold and they will fix it. Other quality scopes are the Zeiss, Swavoski, the Bushnell elite series, and some of the Burris scopes. I am a Law Enforcement sniper and have to rely on quality optics. Just about any large department PD sniper team, FBI, or military snipers use the Leupold scopes. Just remember, "you get what you pay for" There are no big "rip off" manufacturers when it comes to higher end optic. Cybersniper |
RE: Which Scope?
Have had a Leupold VariXII on my '06 since 1982.........never a problem. Only changes are when I change bullets!
My dad's has been on his .270 since the mid 70's........same results. |

RE: Which Scope?
on my Remington M700 BDL Mountain rifle chambered for .308 win, I have a simmons 44mag 3-10x44mm on it, this setup has killed 9 deer ranging from 20 yards to over 300 yards. The scope has never given me any problems. the funny thing is when i bought that scope I was looking at it and a leupold vx-1 2-7x32mm both scopes were roughly the same price, I picked the simmons over the leupold because the simmons had a much crisper picture. though the leupold had a better name I think that particular simmons scope is actually better then that particular leupold.

RE: Which Scope?
Leupold LPS 2.5x10x45 - one word - awesome
|
RE: Which Scope?
I was leaning Leupold the whole way due to recommendations and reputation.
However, Burris seems to have a lot of features, still Made in USA, also has a lifetime warranty and for a Fullfield II in Matte 3-9x40mm plus a 20X-50mm spotting scope I just paid $200. I'll be sure to report back with my impressions. Info: http://www.burrisoptics.com/fullfield.html |
RE: Which Scope?
I have a Simmons Pro Hunter 4-12x40 AO scope on a Marlin 30-30. ...yeah, I know.... way too much scope and a little overkill for a common 30-30. [8D] Hey, it was on the rifle, when I bought it. I has Kwik-site raised up/see thru sight rings too.
{{you might know the story.... A buddy at work had the Marlin 30-30 and sold it to me for $250 bucks. Sweet little shooter and real accurate out to 100-150 yards. Word has it, the buddy had the 30-30 for years, then bought the big Simmons scope to use on a new .270 or 7mm-08 or whatever, but ran out of $$$ for the bigger rifle. So, he just said "what the heck" and mounted and bore sighted the Simmons Pro Hunter on the Marlin 30-30. Hey, it works... Looks like a darn grenade launcher on top of the old 30-30, or better yet, it's probably comparable to putting a 350ci V8 engine in a VW Beetle! But like I said, hey, it works....}} Anyway, I am thinking of downgrading the big scope on the 30-30 and going with something more suitable for it. If I pick up a nice 30-06 or 7mm or the monster 300Win mag, I'll slap the Simmons Pro Hunter on that. But here's my main question: What would be a nice, light, quick to focus, bang around in the brush, type of scope for the common 30-30? Butch A. |
RE: Which Scope?
ButchA,
I'd advise youto try to find a Leupold 4x fixed compact or a Leupold 2-7 X 33compact... used. I see them out there, and if you don't mind a scratch or 2 they can be purchased from a gun shop out of the used showcase... the shop owner will often mount it with rings and mounts...bore sight it... for under $150.00, and considering the warranty on Leupolds you could always send it to Oregon for a complete once over..usually at NO CHARGE whatsoever |
RE: Which Scope?
Thanks... I have seen Leupold scopes and, my God... the quality and craftsmanship are amazing. Top dollar scope too! [8D] But I don't know about dropping that much $$$ on a scope for a used Marlin 30-30.
I won't be making shots over 100 yards anyway and either hunt from a treestand, overlooking a small field of thickets and high grass, or I'll slow stalk hunt in the heavy stuff. With the see-thru scope rings, I can easily use the open sights and be right on, in 0.2 seconds. But I just want to be able to use a basic, simple, low powered "brush gun" scope. I refuse to look at BSA and Tasco. Sorry.... Can't do it. I had a "Trash-co" rimfire scope on a .22 and it was a total piece of junk. Another question: Which is better? Bushnell or Burris? Butch A. |
RE: Which Scope?
If you are trying to keep your cost under $75.00 installed then you better stick with the Bushnell.
My opinion is that the Burris is a better quality choice than Bushnell....but if you're buying new you'll be hard pressed to keep a Burris under what i mentioned for the used Leupold. What's your budget? |
RE: Which Scope?
Thanks.... My budget? HA! My "budget" is whatever my wife will let me spend!
I remember when my buddy at work let me borrow the Marlin 30-30 last season to check it out, shoot it a few times at the range, hunt with it, etc... I immediately fell in love with it after the first few rounds. It's just one of those timeless classics that just feels right. So, when we were discussing selling it/buying it and whatnot, I took it up to Green Top Sporting Goods (local hunting/firearms/bows/fishing/etc.. store) to get their opinion, appraisal, overall "street value" sort of thing. I told them the price was $250 for the 30-30, scope, and locking case. They agreed and said it was most likely worth $300 due to the big Simmons scope on it. It is from the late 80's and still in pristine condition with no blemishes, rust pitting, dings, dents, whatever. Same with the scope. They kind of laughed at seeing the overall appearance of the big scope mounted on see-thru rings on the 30-30. I mean, in laymans terms, it was like, "Daaay-um! WTF was your buddy thinking?!? You got way too much scope for gun. But still for the condition of everything, it'll go for $300 bucks easy." So anyway, I just want to bring things back into perspective. Take my scenario, but do the reverse (too much gun for scope).... In the reverse fashion, it would be like me having a huge Weatherby but only having a Tasco 1-4x20mm scope on it! [&:] Getting back to your question about price ranges and budgets? I would probably be willing to spend around $100 bucks on a nice, small scale, quick focus, scope that would be perfect for the 30-30. Butch A. |
RE: Which Scope?
Not saying that the quality of these scopes will be up to your liking...but they would fall into the price range and utility that you are seeking
Simmons (if you can find one) Whitetail Expedition 1.5-6 X 32 should be under $100 new with rings and mounts Nikon fixed 4X Pro staff $ same as above Bushnell Banners and Trophy lines have a bunch of scopes in fixed and variable that will come in under $100 I don't think you will need more than 6X but if you could find a 3 x 9 that was somewhat compact that might work for you Personally....I'd go for a little more quality in a used scope....it'll probably last as long os the rifle. Leupold...Nikon... older Redfields...Weavers |
RE: Which Scope?

RE: Which Scope?
ORIGINAL: shootn hogs I have a Leupold M4 4.5x14-50 w/ illum. rect. on my Sendero 300rum. The recticle has already paid off on several nights. Do you have Butler Creek flip-up caps on it? If so, what size fits the eye-piece? (The non-illum takes an 11, so I'm thinking 13 or 14... ) |
RE: Which Scope?
i love my cheap 3-9X-40. works great.
|
RE: Which Scope?
I can't believe with all these replies I have not heard one of my favorites!
I have an old Austrian Mauser (.308) with a Leatherwood variable power scope. I have shot AR15's with Redfield and Bushnell scopes, and I think that the Leatherwood is the best scope I have ever used. |
RE: Which Scope?
[&:]New guy goes with Ziess, took years to graduate, to finer optics. worth every penny!!! sits top of Browning A-Bolt staker 300WSM
Even I am a great shot with this rig!!!!!! can really REACH out & touch |
RE: Which Scope?
I must admit having the best scope and best gun and good ammo doesnt mean a hill of beans if you cant shoot. i have a 1000 yard gun with a leupold on it shooting 1/4 groups at 100 yards and a2000 yard gun shooting 1/4 also with leupold . but i have killed deer at 450+ with my sons BSA on my 7 mag because my scope was broke so........... just had to say that
