The Thomson Center new 22lr auto is really a first class 22.. Have to cast my vote for it..Although, its hard to beat a Ruger 10/22

22LR Choices
Lever Action: Marlin 39A - quality at a reasonable price.
Bolt Action: Can't go wrong with a CZ - best way to stretch your budget & accurate too!
Semi-Auto: T/C Benchmark - very accurate.

As far as the 17's are concerned, I haven't seen what they do to rabbits, but if you are going to squirrel hunt with a 17 better consign yourself to "head shots only", otherwise the 17 will gut & skin em for you....LOL...nothing left to eat.

i suggest the marlin model 881 a full lenght 10shot magazine,its bolt action with a guard over the front sights.the rear sights can be folded down for a scope, it also has dovetail mounts for a rimfire scope.its extremely accurate. ive been greatly satisfied i think u will too.:)

Hard to beat a 10/22 for fun, reliablity, price, and upgradability. You can make them one hole target guns for minimal price. Best all around deal.

If I were going to buy another .22, it would be another bolt action, either a CZ, an older Remington 541, or a Ruger 77/22. Most semiautos are fun for plinking but really are toys compared to a good bolt action .22.

The "best" is sort of hard to get to without carlifying a lot of factors.
First off would be budget...I would argue that all things being equal the Cooper LVT is prbably the nicest little rimfire out there but that's no budget gun.

Over all for rabbits and squirrels, the Marlin 980 V (NOT the 880SQ) is a pretty nice little gun and at a budget.

The 77/22 is nice and for a little bit more you can send the gun to Randy at CPC and really get it tweaked. Also the CZ series rifles do a nice job on a budget...and oddly the IZH Biathlon Basci is a novel shooting bolt action that has a GREAT trigger out of the box and is accurate beyond what you would ever expect for such an inexpensive rifle. One downside is that is can only use a scope.

For the money the 504 just isn't there. It's very good but if it wre about $150 less it would be a solid vaule. For the MRSP of $500+...it's just one of many other bolt guns that's nice looking and pretty good shooting but not a value.

Bassman... You might not know this but don't buy a 10/22 to hunt with in Pa. It is illegal to use a semi auto rifle in Pa for hunting. A bolt action Ruger would be a nice gun, a little expensive but nice.

I own a Ruger 10/22 and if ur looking for a 22lr i highly recomend it i have never had a problem with mine :D
