a good .22lr
I am looking for a new .22lr. I was wondering what gun manufacturer makes the best one. But there also is the choice of buying a .17HMR. I will be using it on rabbits and squirrles mostly. Would it be to powerful, and totally rip them to shreds. I would like some advise

RE: a good .22lr
I don't know about ripping them to shreds...
The .22 is SIGNIFICANTLY less expensive to shoot than .17. As far as I am concerned, you have two choices: 10/.22 (semi) or Marlin 25n (bolt). Good Luck. CE |
RE: a good .22lr
I'd get a 10/22. There the best auto .22's out there.
|
RE: a good .22lr
for good old rabbit and squirrel hunting the tried and true .22LR is cheap and worthy as anything you can use. To it's range which I consider 35 yards it's extremely accurate and powerful enough to do small game very well.
I have a Marlin 60 semi auto that's very accurate and reliable but the 10/22 crowd is very high on that gun as well. Look the field over....there's some very fine bolts, autos, as well as leveractions and pumps and the used racks present a plethora of bargains as well. |
RE: a good .22lr
ill go with the marlin .22 its a good one & i have one for squirrel hunting & also a .17 hmr thats good also...............but its up too you tho

RE: a good .22lr
I just had to take a look, and according to Midway, you can get a brick of .22 for the same price as 50 .17!?!?!?!?! That makes it a no brainer to me.
Kev, how does that .17 shoot? I have seen a bunch of guys shooting it at my range, and they love the caliber. Have you hunted with it much? I didn't have it in me to buy a .17 rimfire, and ended up with a .204. Give us a report, please. Good Luck. CE |
RE: a good .22lr
I have a marlin bolt topped with a straight 4 power and love it. I have been shooting this setup for ten years and a couple of thousand rounds. It is very accurate and will do the job well. I even use it for woodchucks out to a 100 yards
good luck |
RE: a good .22lr
If it's any consolation, when the .17's came out, I bought one of each in a Savage 93. A .17, and a .22 mag. I kept the .22 mag if that says anything. You didn't say how much you want to spend. If your on a tight budget, a Savage MKII is a good choice. If you can afford a little more luxury, than my choice would be a CZ american. It's beautiful, shoots very well, and are really not to costly. If you want a semi auto, than the ruger 10/22 will be the most reliable. I also have a Marlin model 60. It is, without a doubt the most accurate rifle I have ever had the pleasure of owning. But, it is not nearly as reliable as the Ruger.

RE: a good .22lr
what about the ruger 77/22 bolt action
|
RE: a good .22lr
They aren't the prettiest gun on the market, and their triggers stink. If you are going to pay for a gun in that league,I would still recommend the CZ. And don't even consider the Remington 504. It's gross in all kinds of ways![:'(]

RE: a good .22lr
The Thomson Center new 22lr auto is really a first class 22.. Have to cast my vote for it..Although, its hard to beat a Ruger 10/22

RE: a good .22lr
22LR Choices
Lever Action: Marlin 39A - quality at a reasonable price. Bolt Action: Can't go wrong with a CZ - best way to stretch your budget & accurate too! Semi-Auto: T/C Benchmark - very accurate. As far as the 17's are concerned, I haven't seen what they do to rabbits, but if you are going to squirrel hunt with a 17 better consign yourself to "head shots only", otherwise the 17 will gut & skin em for you....LOL...nothing left to eat. firstshot --------------------------------- Make your first shot count! |
RE: a good .22lr
i suggest the marlin model 881 a full lenght 10shot magazine, its bolt action with a guard over the front sights.the rear sights can be folded down for a scope, it also has dovetail mounts for a rimfire scope.its extremely accurate. ive been greatly satisfied i think u will too.:)

RE: a good .22lr
Hard to beat a 10/22 for fun, reliablity, price, and upgradability. You can make them one hole target guns for minimal price. Best all around deal.
|
RE: a good .22lr
If I were going to buy another .22, it would be another bolt action, either a CZ, an older Remington 541, or a Ruger 77/22. Most semiautos are fun for plinking but really are toys compared to a good bolt action .22.

RE: a good .22lr
The "best" is sort of hard to get to without carlifying a lot of factors.
First off would be budget...I would argue that all things being equal the Cooper LVT is prbably the nicest little rimfire out there but that's no budget gun. Over all for rabbits and squirrels, the Marlin 980 V (NOT the 880SQ) is a pretty nice little gun and at a budget. The 77/22 is nice and for a little bit more you can send the gun to Randy at CPC and really get it tweaked. Also the CZ series rifles do a nice job on a budget...and oddly the IZH Biathlon Basci is a novel shooting bolt action that has a GREAT trigger out of the box and is accurate beyond what you would ever expect for such an inexpensive rifle. One downside is that is can only use a scope. |
RE: a good .22lr
And don't even consider the Remington 504. It's gross in all kinds of ways! Drilling Man |
RE: a good .22lr
For the money the 504 just isn't there. It's very good but if it wre about $150 less it would be a solid vaule. For the MRSP of $500+...it's just one of many other bolt guns that's nice looking and pretty good shooting but not a value.
|
RE: a good .22lr
Bassman... You might not know this but don't buy a 10/22 to hunt with in Pa. It is illegal to use a semi auto rifle in Pa for hunting. A bolt action Ruger would be a nice gun, a little expensive but nice.

RE: a good .22lr
I own a Ruger 10/22 and if ur looking for a 22lr i highly recomend it i have never had a problem with mine :D
|
RE: a good .22lr
My wife and I just picked up a used MK77/22 for $400. The gun is mint and the trigger is set perfect! Not sure yet what it's set at but I like it. I'll be throwing a scope on it this week and I'll be out by the weekend knocking down the silhouettes!! Kittery Trading Post in Kittery, ME. had at least two more used one in the rack! A new ones go for $519

RE: a good .22lr
I have been using my ruger 10/22 stainless for about 5 years now and it has never failed me. I have dropped many many squirells, hares, with grouse. It is an accurate reliable gun.
