I don't totally understand your post, but...
The 17HMR is faster than a 22mag, and has a little better range. The 17 is a little touchy in the wind, though. I've noticed it more with my 17 than with a 22 mag. The shells are a little more, but they're not outrageous.
Just my opinion.

The .17 is actually better in the wind than the .22 mag. It has a higher ballistic co-efficiant, and less wind drift. We compared my .17 to my .22 mag in one of our hurricanes they call chinook winds. The .17 actually did outshoot the .22 buy a bit. Good luck on your purchase.

i have the rem 597 .17hmr[i know, i know the 597 auto is junk in most of the post] . i have shot the cci hp and hornady bt and can tell you they are both awesome out to 150 yards.i have settled on the hornady and get groups that are surprising for an auto.no jams or malfunctions after about 400 rounds.great cal. just don't hit where you want to save the meat.
