Primary carry gun is an alloy framed Para-Ordnance P-12. If I need less gun, I go with a Smith & Wesson M36. Defense ammo is by Pro-Load. Mrs. Charley carries a Kel-Tec P32, her house gun is a Makarov with Novak sights I installed for her. Her ammo is Winchester Silvertips in .32 ACP, the Mak uses Hornady's JHP.

I love my Kimber Pro CDP, but when it comes to me "packing" for the defense of my family or myself, my S&W 66 .357 is what I pack. The wife packs a model 60 in .38. Both are loaded with Fed Hydra-shoks. As for home pretection, I've got an old Stevens SXS 12ga with barrels cut to 19 inches. If I don't have time to get to the SXS, the Kimber and the Smith are both in the nightstand.;)

Hi Matt / PA,

My wife and I share several handguns that we carry. Depending upon dress, activity, local, and of course anticipated threat level.

Springfield XD 4" .40 S&W
ParaOrdnance P-12 .45 ACP
Glock G-26 9x19
S&W Md 65LS 3" .357 Mag
S&W Md 649 2 1/8" .357 Mag
S&W Md 642 1 7/8" .38 Spec
KelTec P3AT .380 ACP
KelTec P32 .32 ACP

We have additional handguns, but those listed above see the CCW duties. I will usually carry either the XD .40 or the G-26 as my primary and the P3AT as a BUG. The wife normally has the 642 or the G-26 as her primary and sometimes will carry the P32 as a BUG. Though the other guns listed above will sometimes get rotated in for various reasons.

The carry loads vary from gun to gun. It's fair to say that either Corbon, Speer Gold Dots, or Federal Hydrashoks get the nod most of the time! The exception is the .357 Magnums which get Federal Classic 125 grain JHP when carried with magnum loads. Though they sometimes have the same Speer Gold Dots 135 grain .38+P's we use in the short barreled .38, as they have less muzzle flash and will expand when fired from a 2" barrel.

I have two that I carry on a regular basis. My favorite is my .45 Kimber Polymer Target. Second is a Baby Eagle .40

The Kimber likes just about anything I feed it. The BE is a bit more finicky.

My first choice is a Ruger SP-101 .357 Mag with a 3" barrel. At the moment, though, I'm using a Steyr M40 .40 S&W. I'd like to start training with and carrying a .45 ACP, and I like the Para-Ordnance CCW, but it's a bit pricey for me.

I'll bet I'm the only one who's going to have a SA as my carry gun, but it's a Ruger Vaquero .44mag or Ruger "Vaquerito" Single Six .32H&R, one or the other goes mostly everywhere with me....Kansas is open carry or NO carry state, and open carry tends to frighten the public to more hassle than it's worth to me.

If it's not one of those, it's a .38spcl Cobra Derringer, which is mostly concealed even when it's worn openly just because it is so small!!

As far as my CCW pistol goes (when traveling abroad), it's either that Derringer or a Jennings J-22 .22lr-just because I have it. If I move to a state with CCW, I'll likely be picking up a Kel-tec .380.

Glock29rd,
So Far the 4" Service XD .40 has treated me very well! I only have about 300rds of WWB FMJ thru it so far without more than one hiccup I think? In the first 50 rounds I had 1 FTF but from then on it's just gobbled up everything without a hitch. Still breaking it in but boy is it fun to shoot.
I can't imagine an easier auto to clean as well.......super simple breakdown and nothing hard to get the crud out of.
The "Grip it and Rip it" safety system as well as the cocking and loaded chamber indicators make this a very safe and practical defensive weapon. You can tell if it's cocked and loaded in pitch darkness just by a quick feel.

Right now I'm running 180gr JHP WWB thru it for maybe another 200rds then I'll move to the primary defense rounds and see which it likes and run a couple hundred thru it to be sure.......for now it sits with the plain old WWB 180 JHP in it (At least I know they will feed smoothly) until I move onto something more specialized for defensive purposes.

I have a new "Don's Guide Rod" and a 22# Wolff spring ordered for it to reduce the muzzle flip a bit more (not bad to begin with) and further enhance feeding.
It does get back on target quickly now and Double Taps are very accurate.
I haven't really shot for group accuracy yet as I am just breaking the gun in but it seems pretty good. AT 15 and 20 yards offhand I can keep them all inside the "Black" on a 25 yard Slow Fire target face which is about the size of a person's head. (Except for the occasional WWB "flyer";))

A ton of fun to shoot!:D So far I'd recommend it highly.

Well.........you can add another possible to the list I posted! I just found a Springfield XD SubCompact in 9x19. It's very lightly used, (the finish is barely worn on the top of the barrel at the breech). And even though I'd prefer a .40 S&W better than another subcompact 9x19, (I already have a G-26 that the wife likes well), when I saw a nearly like new SA XD, in the box, with both magazines and all the paperwork for.........$275.00, I couldn't help myself!

Now all I need is to get it to the range , check out functional reliability and find an ammo it likes! And of course another holster. :D

AK.....I can see where this gun causes an addicition and that's a SUPER price![:-] I would have snatched it myself in a heartbeat.
Check XDGear.com , they have magazine extensions for the subs that make that little grip much more comfy for a bigger hand. They look factory too.
I tried a regular 9mm Sub XD and I felt like I was falling off the bottom of it.
If I picked one up I'd have to get extensions.
Oh and you'll have to get an XML Tac light for it too.....:)

(By the way , had to stop at Wally World today and snag 3 more value packs of the WWB.....too much fun I tell ya.;))
I should have my new Guide Rod and 22# Wolff spring tomorrow so it'll be off to the range to see how it likes the new stuff.

Hi Matt / PA,

Addictive is one way of stating it! ;) (In this case addiction is a good thing.....isn't it:eek::eek:????) Thanks for the info about the website, I'll check it out right after this reply. If I end up with the XML Tac light it will actually probably see more use on my 4" XD .40 S&W when used in the "house gun" role. I don't know if I'll get a holster for the gun with light or not.

Those WWB at Wally world are addictive as well :). I've still got about half a case of it in .40 S&W downstairs and nearly as much in 9x19, and even less in .45ACP (time to restock :D). The worst of this addiction thing is that my wife just picked up a used GP100 6" for Father's Day for me (about 99% condition) that I haven't fired yet. (And Gander Mountain just called today to inform me the holster I ordered for it is in.) It will get christened the same time as the "new" (used) XD. My wife has already made it known in no uncertain terms she will be doing some of the christening! :D

Aaaahhhhhhh..........the good life....err I mean good wife!

Thanks again Matt / PA. I checked out that site and see the extensions are made by Pearce, who make the ones I use on the G-26. I'll make sure I equip one out of every two mags with an extension. Some of the mags I'll leave stock just in case the extra size makes a difference in concealment on occasion.

Urban/suburban: Walther PPK in .380

Small enough to be truly inconspicuous for those who might be offended by mysterious bulges and hard lumps, especially in summer time.

Up in the woods: Stainless Ruger Redhawk in 44 Mag.

Stainless makes it nice, it goes right in the sleeping bag with me. Have always been concerned when camping that the zipper on the sleeping bag may stick or freeze when the threat shows up -- got enough room in the bag to just shoot right through it -- no safeties, no slide locks, no racking the action, just wake up, cut through the haze, grab it, evaluate, and pull if necessary. I've never needed it, but it helps in the "sweet dreams' department.

Two extremes for very different missions and each mission can easily be identified well in advance.

The S&W Model 28 (27? -- its been a while) in 357Mag with a 4" barrel was my favorite until the David and Goliath "team" came along.:D

For in town use or a truck gun I like my Glock 17 loaded with 147 grain silvertips.

Out in the woods camping, hinking etc, I use a S&W M629 stainless .357 mag with 158 grain semi-wad cutters.

I'd like to add a 4" titanium 44 special for my hiking gun.

On the road "travel" gun S&W 357 mag w/ 6inch barrel. Daily carry weapon for CCW is S&W 38 special/ 4inch barrel.
I have had many attempt to talk me into getting a 9mm, or a semi-auto with a clip that holds more...more is not better! I beg to differ, and if needed I have what I need at home. ;) If you are going to carry with a CCW you had better dang well know what your mindset is, and how accurate you are! No offence to anyone meant. And.......when it is just me and my son I cannot rely on a gun that may/may not jam if needed. May sound crazy but thats my frame of mind. :)

Know what else makes for a REALLY fun SD gun, another derringer, ok, sorry, but a double 3.5" bbl .410/.45colt makes for one heck of a SD gun, ok, so it's only two shots, something in the neck of 95% of SD cenarios never have a shot fired, and the .410 or .45colt would certainly pack enough punch should the need to rip one arise!
