My friend has a British .303 its realy old and its not a Enfield. He doesnt know what it is. To work the bolt on it all you do is pull it straight back and forward. I doubt thats this is enough info for any one to know what it is but I was just wandering if any one had any idea?

Most likely its a Ross, a rifle used by the Royal Canadian armed forces. They used it until somewhere late 1914 when they abandoned it for the SMLE. The action wasn't up to the conditions in the trenches it seemed.

Only straight pull rifle chambered in .303 that I am aware of is the Ross. If you are certainit is in .303, that is most likely.

I think the Ross rifle probably killed as many of it's own users during combat. My understanding is if the gun is stripped and not re-assembled just right, that damn bolt would come back at the shooter, smashing his face. Be very careful with this design.

Oh, well the good thing is that he can't shoot it any way it has a big crack in the stock.

Not all Ross rifles are dangerous. The 1910 model could blow the bolt back in your face is it wasn't assembled, but the earlier models were perfectly safe. I have a 1905 model with U.S. acceptance stamps that shoots just fine.
