I will take the 300 rum and never look back

RE: Which 300
First a few questions should be answered before anyone reccomends one over the other.
#1 - Do you ever plan on taking a shot at an elk or moose at or beyond 500 yards? #2 - Do or will you practice enough to take advantage of the added energy, velocity, and recoil of a cartridge like a 300 ultra? #3 - Do you like a lot of muzzle blast and a lot of noise? They all have their place but unless you can say yes to all three of these questions there really is no reason for the ultra mag under 99% of elk and moose hunting conditions. While the regular old 300 Win mag may not be as "sexy" as the other two it will be perfectly adequate for the same 99% of elk and moose hunting conditions. With good reloading it can be bumped up in power very near the 300 Wea. Mag. I personally see the 300 ultra as a very specialized elk cartridge. My vote would go to the 300WSM but since that one isn't on your list I vote for the 300 Win. mag. |
RE: Which 300
Well all depends on what you're looking for and if you handload. Let's be honest in 99.9 % of the time one does not think of shooting at elk beyond the 300 yard mark and most can't shoot good enough to ensure a one shoot kill under hunting conditions. The ole 300win mag is a very good round and the least recoil of the three. The weatherby is a good round also I've owned two 300's. The RUM IMHO is the least desireable out of the three. It uses alot more powder than a 300 win mag with what I think is a minimum gain.
If you insist on the latest new offering the 300WSM has propbaly the best performance to powder out of the new offerings. |
RE: Which 300
I believe my next gun will be a short handy lever action for deer, bear and moose in the bush. It will be a Savage 99 in .300 savage.

RE: Which 300
Well, that would depend on the use. I would throw out the WBY right away because of the cost and availability of the brass and ammo. For extremely long shots, beyond 400 yds or so, I would take the Ultra, but I wouldn't even want to take a shot at an animal at that range anyway. For all practical purposes, I see no more need for anything more powerful (in the .30 class) than the .300 Win. It can handle anything on the continent with out looking back, the ammo is cheaper, barrel life longer, and it has stood the test of time. If I wanted more power for bigger game, then I would go completely into the next few classes of calibers and snag a .375 H&H!

RE: Which 300
If you have well above average shooting skills and are willing to practise a great deal, the 300ultra does offer some advantages at distances of 400 yards and over. For most people though the 300win mag is a far better choice. That leaves the 300wby out altogether as the win mag is more practical for most people and the ultra produces more velocity.

.300 Win

RE: Which 300
Weatherby - just because its cool.

RE: Which 300
Tonight I sighted in my new scope on my .300 70 Winchester.
44 shots total. OUCH [:@] |
RE: Which 300
.300 Wby. Mag. Good luck.
|
RE: Which 300
bigbulls, I want peoples opinions on what they think based on thier knowlege.
|
RE: Which 300
If you still want a .300 mag, I would go for the .300 win mag. It uses less powder that the wby or ultra, are easier to shoot, and will still kill things dead. I shot a .300 for a while, and I can't complain about it's performance. There's only one kind of dead!
|
RE: Which 300
bigbulls, I want peoples opinions on what they think based on thier knowlege. Like I said, they all have their place but to just pick one with out knowing what it would be used for and / or the type of hunting conditions it will be used it is not an opinion based on anything other than maybe a "cool factor" is pointless. Besides, I gave you an opinion based on my knowledge of the three. In 99% of hunting circumstances 99% of hunters will encounter the regular 300 Win. mag will fill the bill quite nicely. Sorry, but I'm not just ganna say that the 300 ultra is better than the other two just bacause it's bigger. |
RE: Which 300
As a 300Ultra owner, I have to say the Winnie. Nope, I like the RUM, shoot, I take them both.
|
RE: Which 300
BC are you doing a Kerry Waffle on this one?:D:D:D
|
RE: Which 300
If this is your first 300 I would suggest the 300 win mag or the 300 wsm which you didn't mention. If these don't offer enough velocity/flat trajectory and you absolutely positively have to shoot game at 500 yards then buy the 300 ultra.
|
RE: Which 300
Olkelk, very good. You noticed my moves. I have been watching CNN alot lately. Think this waffle step is catchy

another vote .300 wsm
my vote is for the .300 wsm because you can get it chambered in a featherweight rifle...
so dont complain when you had to lug your 300 ultra mag rifle that weighs 9 lbs around the brush when i only had to carry 6 lbs of rifle all day..lol |

RE: another vote .300 wsm
We've seen two model 70's in .300 wsm this week that will not properly chamber a cartridge. Were still trying to figure that out.
|
RE: another vote .300 wsm
my choice is the 300 wsm. love my browning abolt!!!! sweet shooting and accurate as heck.

Depending on what WSM you have you probably will not get lighter then 8lbs with a scope (Browning abolt 6 1/2 lbs normal scope and mounts adding 1 1/2lbs) . Some situations a lightweight rifle is nice but a heavier rifle sure makes it easier to connect at long range. |
RE: Which 300
As the owner of a .300 Weatherby, I cast my vote for the......(drumroll)........
.300 Winchester Mag |
RE: Which 300
But now, I shoot a 7mm. With a 300win or a 300wsm I dont gain and velocity or energy. But I do like the short mags. I'm thinking about a 300wby or a 300rum. What do you think between the 2?
|
RE: Which 300
For what? You gotta provide us with some information about your hunting style and actual needs. What do you want to use a 300 mag for?
Help us help you. Please! Jack rabbits? Deer in thick woods? Deer over long fields? Elk and moose up close? Average hunting distances? Elk at 700 yards? 1000 yard target? |
RE: Which 300
300 Savage is my favorite 300.
|
stubblejumper ...........
my 6 lbs rifle has a muzzlebreak.......lol... so have fun at the chiropractor with your 9 lbs
rifles..lol.....stubbie..lol....... |
RE: stubblejumper ...........
I prefer the 300 win mag, it has enough power for just about anything, and rifles and ammo are readily available... Almost everyone chambers a rifle for it and every ammo manufacture makes ammo for it, and you can get ammo anywhere for it.

RE: Which 300
bigbulls is right.
#1 - Do you plan on takiing a shot at an elk or moose at or beyond 500 yards? No, Most of my Elk will be with in 100-300 yards. But it would be nice to take a shot if it was at 400 yards. #2 - Do or will you practice enough to take advantage of the added energy, Velocity, and recoil of a cartrige like a 300 ultra? What do you mean? I would try to practice at least 1-2 times a month. Or whenever I had time. I am only 12 but I shoot a 7mm. The kick dont bother me a bit. I am not afraid of Kick. |
RE: Which 300
From those answers my opinion would be that the 300 winchester or 300 WSM would be right up your alley. Either one of these two would be more than enough gun for elk and moose to 500 yards. Granted the trajectory is not as flat as the ultra mag but once you get past about 300 yards you will have to compensate for bullet drop with both any way. The difference between the ultra mag and the regular mag is only about 2.5 - 3 inches at 400 yards shooting 180 grain bullets.
By practice enough to use the ultra mags extended range I mean it takes a lot of time at the range, and not just sitting at the bench, to be able to consistantly hit a target at more than 400 yards. Shooting at a hundred yards every day will not cut it either. You would need to shoot at 400 and 500 yards to know your bullets trajectory and know how much to compensate for bullet drop and wind. IMO, a lot more than a couple times a month. If you are not able to put in this kind of time and effort then you will never realize the ultra mags real performance potential and IMO would be a waste of money. The cost of the win mags ammo is also about half that of the ultra mag so you can afford to shoot more with the win mag. Just a note on recoil........ the ultra mag is no light weight. A 7mm rem mag has about 19 foot pounds of recoil energy where as a 300 ultra mag has about 32 foot pounds of recoil energy. It is very good to see a 12 year old that likes the kick of a gun but I would caution you to shoot an ultra mag first before you decide to plop down your parents money.;) 32 foot pounds is quite substantial for many adults. To be perfectly honest with you a 7mm Rem mag has plenty of oomph at 400 yards for the largest of elk and moose so you already have plenty of gun. However I would never stop any one from having another rifle to shoot.;):D Good luch with what ever you decide. |

RE: Which 300
I pretty much think it's a mute point. Under field conditions there are probably only 1 or 2 hunters out of a thousand capable of taking a shoot beyound 300 yards. Next time you're at the range ,run 50 yards and pick up your rifle and shoot a 4 inch group or less at 300 yards ,I'll even let you use a post like you would a tree.
IMHO with close to 40 year experience hunting shooting at deer sized game beyond 400 yards ,300 for elk and moose, is irresponsible ,there are just to many variables that come into play. I really think gun manufactuors do hunting a disservice by fostering thier 500 yard comparison B.S. when 99.99% of those out there can't shoot well enough to do it. |
7.62X63MM IS GREAT
I match every month here in arizona in the (obsolete bolt action) class which is any military bolt action.. i shoot at targets at 200,300 and 5oo yards... with practice you also
can hit targets the size of a coyote at 5oo yards.. i do it every month with a 100 year old rifle model.......do i suggest making a 5oo yard shot at elk on public land....(NO). good luck guys...choose wisely because a box of 15.00 30.06 bullets will do the same thang that a 30.00 dollar box of 300 mag bullets will do at 300 yards and that is (BRING AN ELK DOWN)............. |
RE: 7.62X63MM IS GREAT
Glock29rd.
I really hope you are not trying to compare the 300 Ultra to the 30-06. Becouse of the ballistics. The 300 Ultras is a very nice long range cal. but at short ranges you should prob. stick with something a bit milder like the 30-06 or the 7mm Mag or even the 300 Win. mag. Many people feel that the 7mm Mag and the 300 Win. Mag are pretty equil in stature. (in vel. and preformance.) So if you already have the 7mm Mag. why qould you opt. for the 300's.? hunter338 SORT OF LIKE WIPING BEFORE YOU PUPE, JUST DONT MAKE SENSE!!!! |
