RE: good,fast,flat,accurate caliber rifles
Hunt4fun1-To truly find out how accurate a rifle is requires extensive load testing that most people will never do.Most people will try one or two loads and decide if a gun is accurate or not based on the guns performance with those loads without even trying any more if the results were not good.Price alone is also not an indicator of accuracy.Weatherby's for example are quite expensive yet only guarantee 1-1/2" groups at 100 yards.Savages are much lower in price yet are often as accurate and sometimes more accurate than a weatherby.Sometimes you come across a gun that no matter what load you try it simply won't shoot decent groups. It does not matter who the shooter is the gun is not going to perform. On the other hand you may come across a cheap gun that shoots really well with the first load you try. These are extremes and neither situation is all that common. All gun manufacturers built their rifles to certain standards and some will be above and some will be below these standards so there is no way to guarantee accuracy based on brand or model.

RE: good,fast,flat,accurate caliber rifles
Stubblejumper,
Be what may, the TOPIC was "good, fast, flat, accurate caliber rifles" and my point was; based on the ballistic tables printed in almost every gun rag and by every factory, I chose to go 7mm Rem. Mag. and my personal opinion is if the original author asks, and I quote," my question is, what would be the best larger caliber bullet (.24 and up) that is fast, flat, accurate, and does not chew up a barrel", my answer would be obvious. |

I see what stubblejumper is getting at. You did say "Accuracy is determined by the shooter. The rifle and load only help." Really you can't have one without the other. A fellow who can't hold steady, can't control his breathing and yanks the trigger as he flinches, will not shoot any rifle/load/scope combo well. (he will possibly bring the biggest buck into camp mind you) A rifle/load/scope combo that will never shoot better than a 5 in. group when in a shooting vice, will not shoot better groups than that in the hands of even the best target shooter. (it might be the perfect gun for the fellow described above) It is a given...that shooters will be expressing our opinions about "the most accurate cartridge" and the "best deer rifle" and "the best all around cartridge" when the next millenium roles around (God willing) Robin Edited by - Duffy on 01/07/2002 01:18:26 |
