Barrel length for 270win?

Is 22" sufficient or should I go with 24"? I will be shooting both factory and hotter loads. Thanks!

I'd take the 24" as well.

If i had a choice i'd get the 24" as well, however the 22" is sufficient and either will do fine from a 270 win. You may be able to get a little more velocity out of the 24" but i don't think you'll be able to tell the difference unless shooting thru a chrony.

Hi Back40,

I guess before I'd answer that question I'd ask myself.....how to I envision using this rifle most of the time? If the answer is a short walk in to sit on a stand overlooking lots of open space......I'd take the 24". If I planned on using it in an environment that is predominantly open.....and long shots are the rule.....I'd take the 24". If I intended to use it anywhere the extra 2" wouldn't extract a penalty......I'd take the 24".

But if I intended to use it in thick, heavy, cover. Or if I was going to be carrying it all the time, (little sitting.....or other means of travel), or if I was hunting in an area where a "long shot" is only 200 yards......I'd take the 22" barrel.

The .270 Winchester gives up very little in the way of meaningful velocity when it goes from a 24" barrel to a 22" barrel. But it does give up something in handiness. I'd decide what I intended it's predominant use would be.....and make my decision accordingly!

Good luck with your decision!

Dave

Well I'd post my answer but I'd be typing the same thing that AK did.

I have both one a pump 22" and abolt 24" barrel, both harvested animals with little troubles;). As AK mentioned it really depends on your situation and application which one will be best suited.

I've got a 270 with a 22' barrel and one with a 24' inch barrel. They both kill deer or anything I shoot with them. Most manufacturers use a 22' barrel on their Non-Magnum rifles. I guess this could be to save costs in manufacturing, but I think they do it because it works. I don't notice all that much difference in the two that I have. Both are accurate and dependable rifles!
