Default 30-30 Winchester

How effective is a 30-30 on gamw from, say Whitetail to elk? I have alot of confidence in this little 94 as a close range gun but how will it do on game, the gun is still new, so I havent had a chance to go hunting with it.

Cherokee-The 30-30 works great on whitetails out to about 150 yds. I have no experience with elk though.

the 30-30 makes a great gun for whitetails, i dont have any experience hnting elk but i do know your max range with a 30-30 is 200 yrds tops, the 30-30 just doesnt have enough muzzle velocity for shots past 200 yds, also your remaining energy probably wouldnt be sufficient to harvest a very large animal like an elk.

i've known a few guys to use 30/30s for elk but they kept their shots at 50 to 75 yards.

The .30-30 is a fine yet, close range rifle.....it don't begin to compare with the .30-06 for range.....and yes...power means range....

If you're willing to live with it's range, take it hunting anything you want.....but remember...for a very few dollars there's .30-06 power available.

I personally suggest it be retired for deer hunting in the woods...where it's a shining beacon a true classic.

The .30-30 will do at 100 yards.....about what the .30-06 does at between 275-300 yards.

It works very well for deer at moderate ranges.....it is marginal on elk. Just use it carefully!

The 30-30 in the past has taken some of the biggest bears throughout North America, so I'd think your 30-30 is more than enough for whitetails and elk. Just pick a good premium bullet and hit the animal properly and you'll have meat to eat and stories to tell.

More than enough? Not hardly. For deer at close range, fine if that is what you want to shoot. For elk, get something decent.

For deer the 30-30 would be just "OK" at ranges under 150 yards. As for Elk, it would probably be good for less than 100 yards, power-wise!
If you've got one OK, use it at shorter ranges! (on deer)
If you are out to buy one, spend your money on something better!

I think the 30-30 Win. is ok if shots are under 100 yds., and if you use Barnes "X" FN 150 gr., or Nosler Partition 170 gr. RN. Good luck.
