I don't have a dictionary handy but, I think that it would be fair to say that to most people, hunter, anti, or just plain old non-hunter, poaching is doing something illegal in the taking of game!
Is breaking any game law the same as being say, an outlaw spotlighter, killing way more than the legal limit?
Maybe not in the strictest sense of the word, but be careful because if you are caught, you'll still pay fines and may end up being labeled a "poacher!"

DG, I've got a good example for you. Last year in Texas, they came up with a new law, not only do you have to "properly" fill out AND attach a tag to your deer!
Now you also have a "hunters log" on the back of your licence! Don't fill that out, it costs you 500 bucks! Regardless of how "properly" your tag was filled out!
Does breaking this law through forgetfullness make you a poacher? NO!
However, throw night hunting, trespassing, or shooting from public roads into the mix, and you will likely be labeled a poacher!

RE: .308's Killing Power as Perceived My Me

My experience has been that the .308 is a VERY deadly whitetail rouind, as is the '06. I cannot tell any difference between these two rounds when shooting 150 or 165 grain bullets at deer. The 180's are for larger game, like elk, and for elk, the '06 has a slight edge when using the 180, or better yet, the 200-grain bullet.

First of all, no two game animals will react the same when shot, not even when identical hits are made with the same ammo! In your case, I suspect your first shot didn't hit any immediately fatal organ, and the deer's system got pumped up with adrenalin before the second shot put him down. That adrenalin squirt gave him enough strength and energy to overcome the shock of being shot, and he was able to get back up and stagger off a few yards before he died. What happened would probably have been the same regardless of the round you hit him with! If you have ever hunted deer where the use of dogs is permitted, like Virginia, you'd be amazed how far a pumped-up deer can go after being shot, without giving any visible signs of a hit, even a couple of 12-Ga. slugs right through the heart!! (I once saw a doe run over 130 yards with 5 12 Ga slugs from 5 different hunters she ran past that hit her behind the shoulder. ALL were complete pass-throughs! She was running when the shooting started, and just kept going! No flinch, no nothing! Over a hill, and she was found on the other side. Plenty of blood, though!!)

I couldn't agree more with those that state no two animals will necessarily act alike with the same hits. Doesn't matter if it is a gun, a bow, or a sling shot. Circumstances can play a major role. You can punch a hole through an animal but adrenaline, unlike blood won't leak out.

Check out this clip...Gives a whole new meaning to the cliche "heart of a lion".

In my book that makes guys like you the type that gives hunting a bad name.
Huntsalotey,
WOW! What book are you reading man?!? YOU are the one that breaks the law, tells us all about it, then because a couple of us "called you on it," you say that WE are the bad guys!! You're unbelievable.

If you don't like it when someone calls you on law breaking. Don't type it where you have no idea who is going to read it.

I'm curious, what would you have said to the fish and game officer if you would have gotten caught?

By the way, didn't you read my post that said good luck hunting and that I hoped to be able to help you sometime???

Mainehunt,

You didn't have to call me on it, I plainly told you all about it. And if the fish and game officer would have caught me which they wouldn't today because I don't do that kind of stuff anymore, I would have been truthful and paid the price.
Mainehunt, i want to learn from you and get along on this board so can we please let by gones by bygones? I know you have experience to share and I look forward to learning from you.
By the way I used to read from the wrong book. Thank you for caring enough to call right , right and wrong, wrong. I plainly admit my faults. Hope to do better from now on. Sorry to the game and the name of hunting as well as my fellow hunters for my mistakes. Thanks.

WV is a very different place then most of you guys are from. Alot of land is unknown who owns it. Some people care, most don't I know. People still hunt behind my mothers house. They run rabbits. They don't know whos land it is, and we really could care less unless they bother us. The coal mines might own it, the state might own it. A lot is pretty vast, So unless its strickly posted, most go ahead and cross the land. But after moving around to several states, I can see how people on here feel. I mean here in MD, people are crazy anal over crossin land stuff. I can see kinda why, even though I think they take it to far. Cause land is a premium. Most WV and eastern Ky people don't really stay up at night worrying about such stuff.

For example. Me and my old Father in law is hunting wayne county a few years ago. We pulled off the road and commenced hunting. I from MD now, thought it was state land. We walked out and this guy is there on his tailgate. So I talked to him for a long while. And I said, hey, you know who owns that property over that hill? He said, "why I do", I own most of the valley". I would have never knew it. I said "oh, do mind we are here". He said "why no, you guys be careful and good luck". I know other states want a blood sample, writing in blood, and a lawyer present to hunt on private land and WV might want the same. I am not sure. Things are a little different there.
