FLAT shooting rifle
 

hey all i am looking to buy a bolt action rifle that can be used for chucks to wolf that is capable of really long shots. i was wondering what caliber would be the best and the flatest shooting. i was thinking of a .270 since thats the biggest thing we can carry in my area (southern ontario) since i may want to use it for black bear and moose as well....ive heard .270's r flat shootin.....but how flat?

i was also thinking about the 25-06....ive enevr even heard of these since a few weeks ago (im 18 years old) and from wut ive heard they r pretty flat too....

so id just like to know which caliber would be the best for game up to yotes or wolf...just so ya'll know the most popular ammo i see at stores close to my home are - .223, 22-250, .243, .270....just the ones i recall seeing the most of.

plz let know know how yall feel bout this topic as i wanna do as much research be4 i purchase a rifle.

also, which rifles have the best accuracy/performance below $1000 canadian?

PS. while looking at rifle ballistic charts they show short trajectory and long trajectory....what do these terms mean? on remington.com for the smaller calibers i looked at the short trajectory would be say 5 inch drop at like 350 yards or sumthin but th same bullet with long trajectory the drop would be like 17 inches....plz explain the difference

I would look at a tikka t-3 in 7mmremmag.Flatter shooting and more suitable for bear and moose than the 270win.

If your on a budget I would go with a Savage . Not the nicest of the fanciest but will get the job done and for about 700 bucks.

They have lots of models and calibers to choose from. If you plan on hunting Moose and varmits about your best option would be a 7mm Rem mag. Their is also 270 WSM, 7mm WSM and 300 WSM all of which have long range capabilities.

I agree with stubblejumper....any of the 7MM Mags will serve you nicely.....use enough bullet!!!

CH, If the govt. won't allow any calibre larger than the .270 (actual .277), that would seem to be your best choice. A 7mm (.284) would be too big. A .270 with a lighter bullet would do well on coyotes and such, while the 150g is fine for deer and bl. bear.
Be sure to include a scope and rings in your budget. Without good glass, your rifle won't be that useful. You should plan on spending as much for your scope as your rifle to really get a good shooter. Savage with their new trigger would be a good choice as they are very accurate and still inexpensive. Don't buy the package with a scope as the scope is not of good quality. You'll have to spend quite a bit more to get any better performance than the Savage offers.
The long and short trajectory is a new one on me. Try getting actual catalogs from the rifle makers as well as some ammo makers. That should explain all you want to know about trajectories. If not, try the library for books on shooting and ballistics. Good luck.

For the type of shooting your describing, a 22-250 or a 25-06 would do just fine. Then again, so would a dozen others.
As for trajectory, that is how much the bullet drops over a given distance. Think of it as throwing a rock, the farther the rock flies, the more it drops until it eventually hits the ground. Simple physics.the bullets trajectory is the path the bullet takes before it hits the ground.What you saw on jamington.com was, simply put, short range and long range bullet drop. Some guys like to get more detailed, but thats the basics, bullet flight path= trajectory.
BTW,I thought you were going to use that shiney new Remington for all your shooting, is it fixed yet?? What was the problem?? Just curious.
As for what make to choose, although I don't own one, I've been hearing very good things about Savage lately.Unless of course you want to stick with Remington

If you want to be able to take moose as well and with your legal limitation, you need a 264 Win Mag. Talk about flat shooting. Thats your ticket. May be a little hard to find but it would be worth building one. I made one from a 700 Reming ton in 7mm mag. Big improvement IMO.

i succesfully got my stock refinished on my 870 express super mag and i stopped usin cheap low brasss shells and it hasnt jammed up again.....

i have changed my mind about which rifle i wanna get now....i will be using it as a varmint gun only since i forogt about the .303 bolt that was given to me a few weeks ago.....i could shoot it all day since the recoil is less then my shotgun with 2 3/4" turkey loads......ill just use the .303 for bear and moose.....

so now i am either looking at the .17 remi, .22 hornet, .223, .22-250, 6mm, or .243.....

which one would be the best for long shots on game up to yotes or wolf? i want a really flat shooting gun that has enough power for game up to the size of wolf.
