Take a look at the NEF rifles. Walmart sells them for about two hundred bucks. A 243 or 270 or 308 would serve you well
. I have several and they work well for me.

Hi smoothsteve,

James' recommendation to look at NEF's single shots is a good one. These guns offer a very good value for the money. If you decide that a single shot is not your cup of tea another very good value are the Savage Package deals on their bolt action rifles. They offer a fairly wide variety of calibers already packaged with a scope. If you shop the sales you can probably pick one up for less than $350. complete.

Good luck on your search!

I love the little single shots. Must be that I have reaced my second childhood. Cabelas has been trying for two weeks to find me a synthetic 44 Mag. It should be a good little plinker with 44 special level loads and a good tree stand black bear gun with full power rifle 44 mag loads. Sort of a whimps 45-70

Don't be afraid to look at the used guns too.....I'm finding some very fine Remingtons and Winchesters being traded for the new fads out there.

Hi smoothsteve,

If you take Vapo's advice make sure you take a knowledgable friend....or only buy from a "reputable" dealer. There are indeed many good used rifles available, just be sure you are getting one in good condition for a fair price!

Take a look at the Savage. Great gun for the money. I'd look at something in 308.

Remington model 700 or Savage both are good ones.

They're selling the Savages around here with a servicebale scope and sling for $348. They are carrying nearly every popular caliber from .243-300U-Mag.

That's a deal that's hard to beat. The scopes are Tasco's...but from what I've seen, they're really improving.

I'd opt for a .270...but that's just me. There's really no diff if you hit em where you're supposed to.
