The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
I am curious what kind of scopes you all use. I shoot a 270 bolt action and right now I have a tasco on the rifle not the worst scope I guess, I have taken deer with this setup, but I want to have more confidence when I am at that buck. I am not looking for a real expensive one OR a real large one that looks like a telescope. Maybe anywhere from $100-$200.I was thinking along the lines of the SIMMONS ATEC.What would you recommend. Thanks for any suggestions.

RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
I HAVE A NICE LEUPOLD ON MY RIFLE BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT TYPE IT IS, HAVEN'T SEEN THE GUN IN A WHILE, ITS IN A DIFFERENT COUNTRY

RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
Also use a .270 and have a Seeadler-Optic (German) 3x15x56mm mounted on it. Personally, I would save a little more money up and go for a Nikon Monarch or a Leupold.

RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
Trailmaster,
I think you could get a lemon in any brand. I had a Tasco that did good for 4 or 5 years then went bad. They replaced it, but it took about 3 monthe to get the new one. It zeroed fine , but then quickly went bad. I don't think it could handle the ATV rides. I have a Leupold V-II on my 7MM mag now. I do have a Simmons Atec on another rifle too. I have not used the Atec that much, but it is certainly not as clear as my Leupold. For the slight difference in price, I'll always buy Leupold from now on. For the money they are probably the best scope you can get! Good luck! |
RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
The leupold 3-9 is probably the highest quality scope out there for a reasonable price.

RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
Greets,
While I mean no disrespect to those who can afford to go spend $200 plus on a rifle scope, I wonder what makes you lack confidence in your Tasco? While I agree they are the lower end where scopes are concerned, they CAN be good scopes, (but not apparently always). My suggestion is take your rifle out and practice with it. take lots of shots at various ranges. IF your groups remain constant, or improve, and the Zero at whatever range you sighted it in at remains, then you should have near total confidence in it so long as it does not get banged up or in any way damaged. Just out of curiosity, which model Tasco scope do you have? I hunt with a Man who has had the same Tasco World Class 3-9x40 scope for more than 7 years on his 270. With the exception of resighting for different ammunition, he has not had to do anything to keep it zeroed in. It has performed flawlessly at ranges beyond 400 yards. (He shoots regularly at targets to that far and beyond.) My apologies to those wh disagree, but being one on a limited budget, I find it hard to spend $200 plus on something that I can get for less than $100 and have the device work as well for me. Keep my sig in mind while evaluating this. Oh, my buddy shoots a bolt action .270 Just my uneducated opinion! RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
P.S.
My 30-06 is topped by a Simmons, low end $50 scope. Dont recall the model but it is another 3-9x40, and though I've only had it 6 months its been great so far. Just my uneducated opinion! Terry |
RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
The reason so many don't have confidence in tasco's is because they have been failed by them at inopportune times. A cheap scope might hold it's zero for years but murphy's law being what it is that scope will choose to fail when you have the biggest buck of your life in front of you. Tasco's are pretty much junk in my experience, simmons is the same. The leupold vari-XII 3x9x40 mentioned before can be had for around $180 if you shop around and is in a completely different league than the tasco or simmons. The point is that over the years a tasco or simmons will NOT work as well for you as a leupold, that's practically guaranteed.

RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
Adui13,
I think I posted on a different thread about my experience with Tasco. When I got my 7MM mag years ago, I did'nt have the funds to buy a Leupold or Redfield at the time. I went and bought a Tasco 3x9x40 mm World Class. I thought it was great for a few years until it fogged on an Elk hunting trip-ruined the hunt. After that, I bought a Leupold 3.5X10X40mm VariX-111. I have had this Leupold for 10 years now, and won't ever buy another brand. The difference between the two in clarity is huge, especially in low-light conditions. Just my opinion. |
RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
Adui13, read my above post about Tasco! First one was OK for about 4 years. It literally fell apart! Luckily at the gun range. The other failed me the very first season, result was a wounded and lost deer. No it was not the shooter either! When I took it back to the range no 2 shots were any closer than 4 to 6 inches apart! Also on their lifetime guarantee, it took them almost 3 months to replace it. If a Leupold scope does break, it will be replaced within days, not months!
I know the Leupolds cost more, but as the old saying goes "you can pay me now, or you can pay me later!" The "later" part usually ends up costing more in the long run, and also the uncountable cost of a ruined hunt! I'm not saying every cheap scope will fail, but the odds are sooner or later they will! |
RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
In my humble opinion Tasco's are junk. They don't hold zero, they fog and they Can't gather light worth a darn. If you haven't used a better scope then you don't have anything to compare them with. I have a couple of Leopold's two Nikon Monarch's and while they are great scope's they aren't any better than the Simmons ATEC. I won't buy anything else anymore. I have hunted w/ my ATEC's now for three years, in the rain, snow, early morning and late evening. They gather light as well as the higher end glass. I am real pleased with their performance and surprised with the clarity. If you buy an Atec you'll be pleased with your investment.

RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
Definitely go for Burris or Leupold. Can get 3x9x40s in either for right around $200. Both have US made optics and are 100% Made In The USA.

RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
Hello TRAILMASTER
I to am a Leupold user. I do own one tacso 6x18 with the bullet drop compensater. I dropped the gun and bent the scope literally bent it and on the way back to the truck shot a doe (at close range) so I cant bitch much. They replaced the scope for the shipping cost and I still have it mounted. When you set them side by side and look down range to 400 yard's there is no comparison in the clearity of the leupold. You may want to look at the swift scope's. I don't own one but have heard great things about them on this BB'S and even looked at them my self. The 4x12x50 is $125 at focus camera http://161.58.160.113/ The same in a Leupold is around $500 at Midway. You do get what you pay for thats why Im a little leery of the swift. Hope I helped some Mike |
RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
Welcome to the board you will get a lot of different opinions here. This keeps it interesting. On my hunting rifle I use Simmons. I have one Leupold 12x on my 220 swift and I hate to say it but the Simmons on my 300 win mag puts it to shame in clarity and in light gathering. Maybe I should send it in to be looked at. Buy the way I never have to rezero the 300 it is always right where it is supposed to be.

RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE

Burris & Leupold
The only two companies that use US-made optics in scopes that are 100% Made In The USA |
RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
On my Rem 760 .270 I have a 6X Bushnell Sportview. It's a nice crisp clear scope and was around $100.

RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE

RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE

RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
Greets again,
Ok guys, guess I was a bit strong in my last post. I will admit IF I had the extra $$ to spend I would be shooting with a much nicer scope, a Leupold perhaps. I did not mean to indicate that either Tasco or Simmons had the quality or clarity. BUT For someone on a lower budget who still wants to enjoy shooting and or hunting, a tasco or a Simmons makes a fine scope, in my VERY limmited experience. Just reread my first post before you comment, I did at that time admit them to be lower end scopes. As for the majority here who have the nicer more expensive scopes, you can laugh at me when in a few years ( hopefully I beat the apparent record and make it quite a few years ) I need to replace my Simmons. Just my uneducated opinion! Terry |
RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
Adui13
start saving now and when the time comes you will already have the $$$ saved. My wife freaked out when I told her what I spent on one she said "you only have $400 in the gun and it shoots bullets" |

RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
I have to agree with everyone that mentioned the Leupold Vari-XII 3-9x40 (I think Bass Pro shops still has it in a gloss finish for under $200), also I think the 3-9 VX-I is about $200 dollars from cabelas. I have hade some pretty good experiences with the Bushnell pistol scope, i.e. no problem yet (I shoot HEAVY 44mag loads that have ripped two Tasco scopes apart, literally) But, if there is no real reason to rush this purchase then I would save up and buy, the Leupold. I could have bought a Leupold for the time and money it cost for the Bushnell and Tasco.

RE: The better SCOPE FOR MY RIFLE
Id like to get a new scope myself, but need to spend my cash in other things right now. One thing Ive learned about this topic is that everyone has an opinion. Buy what you can afford and enjoy the sport. What gets me is that people call some scopes junk. If thats the case how are some companies still in business? Seems to me with a poor product your customer base would drop and you would go out of business.
