What do you plan on hunting? Deer, small game, woodchuck...

Is it legal to hunt with semi-auto??

NC, I would suppose looking for a rifle, and that you already have a .22 :D, something for deer, maybe some hogs? For an auto, it is hard to beat the Browning BAR. Not alot of people like the Remington autos it seems. Don' t overlook a good bolt action though. The best caliber for NC game will rage on for days here, so listen to everyone, go shoot some guns, see what you like. It seems that the most popular brands on here are Remington, Browning, Savage, Winchester, Marlin (for levers), some weatherbys, I am sure I missed some. But, you picked the right place to gain knowledge, lots of good guys here. Welcome to the greatest sport ever, don' t be a stranger!

Hey lost your not going to find much new for under $300. I' d reccomend going to a good gun store or gunsmiths shop and look at somthing used they will set you up right and treat you good. After all they want you to keep comming back to them as a regular customer.

walmart has a pretty good combo on a Winchester Model 70 in composite for a little over $300 i believe. it comes in the short magnum too. I' d go for the 270. it has a 3x9x40 scope mounted, although not sure what brand. looks like what you want to me. where you living in NC??? anywhere near Raleigh or Salisbury....i' ll come see if you got any deer:D....have fun and be safe

If you shop around you might find a little Ruger semi auto in 44 Mag. They are a good little rifle and fine for deer out to 100 yards. I have seen several used ones in gun shops.

Hi there,

I have a Remington 742 .30-06 semi-auto. and yes they are legal in NC. Remember that semi' s need a lot of cleaning to operate properly. The only times my rifle jammed a round or casing was when it was dirty, but after a detailed cleaning it worked just fine!

Good luck,

Finding a quality semi for 300 or under could be a hunt in itself.Sounds like your stuck on a semi, why???Since your new to hunting and shooting in general,I' d suggest starting with a good bolt action and gain some experience in both hunting and shooting. NOTHING, I repeat, NOTHING can compensate for lack of knowledge and experience. It doesn' t matter how powerful or how fast the gun shoots, you must remember, it is simply a tool, totally dependent on the skill of the user!!!

As for good cal., 270 and 30.06 are far and away the most popular choices, you can' t go wrong with either.

p.s.

Remember, the laws apply to EVERYONE,even landowners

I had an idea for a fun, useful semi-auto for this guy but if he is not concerned with the law and will do what he wants on " his land" , I don' t think i will bother.
