The St. Louis Police Department is selling off a $1.2 million stash of firearms, including 27 Thompson submachine guns, to help fund the purchase of new Beretta pistols and AR-15 rifles for officers, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The vintage weapons – with some dating back to 1921 – were also carried by cops and FBI agents, and they have been stored in a basement bunker at the department’s police academy ever since they were decommissioned around 60 years ago.

“The original reason to sell the weapons was to purchase new duty weapons, and we did so well on the sale, we will be able to purchase rifles as well, by our own actions without using any budget money,” Carol Shepard, the police department’s purchasing procurement manager, told the newspaper.

Shepard said the department’s current pistols are more than a decade old and are becoming difficult to find replacement parts for. But Raymond Reynolds, the president of Police Trades – a broker who is facilitating the deal – says police weapons are in high demand since they are usually well-kept and rarely fired.

The Tommy guns are being purchased by a Kentucky-based distributor for $22,000 each and will then be sold off to interested buyers if they pass a series of restrictions. Amongst them: needing to hold a federal license to buy such firearms, passing a background check, paying a $200 federal tax and notifying their neighborhood’s local police chief of the purchase, the St. Louis Post Dispatch reports.

Police will begin transferring the weapons pending approval by city officials of a contract with the broker.

they will be what;s called dealer samples, ONLY open to those with a class 3 lic, or to law enforcement, NOT the general public, due to the status of the guns as they are!

they will most likely end up in a collection of someone, or to a shooting range that rents full auto's
there a fun gun, had the chance to have one in shop for a while, sent a lot of rounds down range with it too LOL

they can pull some crazy prices too if they were transferable to everyone(where legal to won that is)

also, there math must be different than mine, 27 guns at 22k, and 4 k in transfer fee's??
doesn't add up to 1.2 million, NOT even half of that, ??
under 600k to be honest, so what else are they selling with these?? to make up 600K, Makes me wonder, as these should be the top money makers for them by a LOT!

Go back and read it again. It says the cache of weapons includes the Thompsons, it doesn't say it only consists of the Thompsons.

Thompson sub machine guns are a lot of fun to shoot. I blew a lot of mony out the barrels of some when I was in the Navy at sea. Twice during a 6 month cruise we would have a shoot for Navy Relief, which is an organization that helps sailor who have emergencys. I think we paid a dollar a magazine, stick mags, not drums. We also shot BARs, M1 cabines and M1 Garands. However, they aren't $22,000 worth of fun.

YEAH I did see that they said Cache, but again, most other police arms are NOT as valuable as these,??

I am NOT really sure how they Beretta 92's are outdated and parts are HARD to get for them>> LOL

I don't know of any issue's with them, and almost hard for me a smaller town guy to see a city having THAT many hand guns in a single police dept
but Then again, I have NO clue as to how many officers and such they have on payroll
600 grand in used small arms, is a LOT of coin and must be a LOT small arms, my bad for not seeing that link with other info!

but still the machine guns most likely are ONLY good to dealers and law enforcement! most likely, NOT for sale to the average guy looking to buy a class 3 weapon!

at the prices there at today, its not really about how much fun there worth, its just how much there growing in worth, there like investements( class 3 items that is)

the first m-16 I got I paid $1500.00 for and thought that was HIGH, last one I sold was for over $25,000.00!

the Volcan Mini gun I WANTED to buy, but didn;t, was $75 k at the time, , last time it sold about 12 yrs later it went for like $200,000.00.
Still regret not buying it when I had a chance at 75k

so, there investments you get to actually PLAY with, NOT many toys you can do that with to be honest!(and NO guns are NOT toys, but you all , I hope get that)

Not many guns out there period you can BUY and shoot and still climb in price yearly!
they have settled down some last few yrs, but they did climb u[p real fast for a few yrs!
and most all, still have parts ill readily available , only the registered PART of the gun is what the tax stamp is for and cannot be replaced!
well simply replaced LOL
