You probably know better than I, but sounds like a 338 Edge (338-300 RUM) might be similar to the 338-378 you mention.
Keep us posted... |

Not quite...the Edge is much smaller. The 338 Diablo (what we're calling it) has a case capacity of 142gr and will push a 250gr bullet at 3440fps...
I want one in an Encore pistol. :D |

I have taken a good many elk and a few mule deer with a 338 WM. Most of the time I used 210 Nosler Partition bullets often pushed by IMR 4350 or RL 19. I do like the heavier bullets in my 338 rifles but the 210 seems to hit above it's weight class and is very effective on elk sized game.
The 9.3x62 is becoming more popular in the US and is often used in Europe and Africa. It seems to me to be nearly identical in performance with the 35 Whelen as an effective mid-range game round. I have used it in Africa, but it is not legal everywhere in Africa for big game. Good choice in picking a 338 WM. It is a powerful round with manageable recoil. |
I've always liked the whelen but the 9.3 can be loaded heavier I believe

-JaKe I used to have a Rem 700 Classic in 350 Rem Mag. It was a good caliber but the 9.3 outshines it in every way so I sold the 350. The 350 was virtually ballistically identical the the Whelen but is was a shorter case so it could be built in a lighter rifle. Mine racked up a lot of deer and elk but since getting a 9.3 I haven't missed it at all. |
I looked for a .350 rem mag for a while a couple years ago and couldn't find one under $1,000. It's on my long list of "if I ever see a great deal I'll pick it up"
At this point I have everything I could possibly need for duty, off duty, hunting (other than Africa) and recreation so anything more is just for entertainments sake. Which isn't a bad thing. -Jake |
You might have a better time ammo-wise if you got a .358 Winchester instead, no? Is the performance really that much lower than the .350 Rem Mag?

.338win mag is one of those cartridges without which I just don't feel right. It's not the fastest or most powerful in its weight class, but for a mid-bore hammer on big game, it's certainly apt.
Sometimes a bigger hammer is just harder to swing. |
