Default Ejector port cover on rem 7400, function?

I am going to shoot my inherited rem 7400 270 saturday, formthe first time. While looking it over, i noticed the ejector port cover is cracked. The part looks like a thin piece of plastic that may commonly fail on these guns

Anyone know what its function is and will the gun malfunction as a result? I intend to repaiir it but want to see how it shoots first.

It's not necessary and will perform perfectly without it even being on there. It's there to keep twigs and stuff from getting in the rifle but I can't think of many times it would be absolutely needed as long as you take even 1/2 way reasonable care of your rifle. Aftermarket metal dust covers last longer and look better and sometimes they have special runs to offer them. They're available for ordering from www.gunpartscorp.com or www.brownells.com .

I really REALLY wish I'd had the money to get 1 of the new model 750 while they were still being chambered in 35 Whelen! Now THAT would be a heckova woods/elk gun!
