Default Ar15

Thinking about picking up an ar15.

Something cheap, may put it together with a friend who knows what he's doing. Ie buying a kit and a lower...

a few options... 1:9 twist vs 1:7

This rifle would be for plinking/target practice and the occasional coyote hunt, here in the midwest along shot would be 200-400yds so bullet weight might not be a real issue,

but thinking won't a 1:7 shoot lighter bullets fine and heavier ones too, where as the 1:9 might top out at 68grs or so? or 60?

Plus can't I just hunt coyotes with a 62gr+ ?

btw how far will a .223 stay supersonic? with a higher BC bullet?

Thanks!

You don't need anything "special" for going any of that !

I use Hornady 55 gr. V-max and never had a concern................................

go with an 8 twist, it'll run 50 to 100 gr fine, a 7 may be hard on light thin jacketed bullets, I've taken woodchucks to 550 with my 8 twist RRA and plain vanilla 55 gr sp's
with good high BC bullets a 223 will remain supersonic to just shy of a grand depending on barrel length/velocity.

Agreed on 1:8" twist.

For 400yrd shooting, you don't need a heavyweight bullet to do that. I shoot 50grn pills at 300 & 400 off of the bench a lot. I run 69grn pills out of 1:9" 24" and 26" barrels, even 75grn A-max's out of the 26" tube. For dropping coyotes at those ranges, no sweat even with 50grn pills.

There's nothing wrong with shooting heavy pills at coyotes, but it's not really necessary. The 75grn A-max puts a hole in one, I can say that!
