I've carried my Romo built M44 (7.62 X 54R) into the woods a few times. It's a bit heavy for a hunting rifle, but I did pound the stuffing out of a feral sow a good while back.

Years ago I did a fair bit of hunting with a Longbranch and a P17. They worked fine, and the 303 was exceptionally accurate. If I knew what the Enfields and the Ross were worth today, I would have kept them. Didn't care for the jungle carbines, as they shot patterns.

When I was in college I killed my first bull elk with my Uncle's sporterized .30-40 Krag.
For 35+ years I've hunted with a couple of commercial Mark X mausers, and I recently bought a rebarreled 98 mauser in .308 Win. These mausers are good strong actions, but they are not near as smooth operating as my .300 Weatherby Vanguard. |
I finally got one with my Mosin Nagant 7.62X54r. Red tag season here in PA and I hunt for a couple different farmers. Because of this thread I decided I'd carry that until I got one. First hunt out on a new farm and about 35 minutes later had one down. I'll try to get some pictures up this evening.

I hunt elk with a Springfield .30-06 that was sporterized by my father. The action and barrel are lifted from a 1903A3 (I assume). He bought a nice walnut wood stock blank and shaped the stock himself. It shoots very well -- under 1 MOA. I love carrying this in the mountains just below treeline in SW Colorado. I have taken three elk and two deer with it. My father never hunted big game with it as he lived in Illinois where deer hunting was shotgun only. I inherited it along with a .25-06 he also made based on a Springfield .30-06 action (with barrel chambered for .25-06 of course). My son is pictured with a pronghorn he took with the .25-06 in 2004. The .25-06 ALSO shoots well. The .25-06 has a medium weight 24" barrel. Both of these rifles have 15.5 length of pull, which I like better than the customary commercial length of pull of 13.5", because I'm 6' 2" tall.

Old sporterized K-98 still shooting the 8mm, An original stocked .303 M4 mark II that still drives tacks at 200 yards with my loads, Haven't hunted with either of them for a few years since I broke down and bought my TC with various barrels. Kind of do miss the old Mauser. It carried well shot fantastic, but was a bit restricted on bullet choice. Same with the Old Enfield. Great shooting rifle just restricted as well in bullet choices. Although of the few choices I had, both rifles were great for whitetail as well as Elk (at appropriate ranges of course).

I walked out the edge of this field right at daybreak. Found a nice spot and got comfortable. Watched six deer work their way up through the woods to the field edge then waited until one I wanted was close enough. Shot right about 90 yards. DRT. Dropped, kicked three times and was done. Wish I would have filmed it. Thats my first Mosin Nagant Deer. I had previously shot a coyote with it.
