.257 Weatherby mag
Thinking of pulling the trigger on a .257 Weatherby mag for deer & antelope hunting. Are the Weatherby Vanguard (stainless synthetic) rifles good? Any other rifles in a .257 Weatherby you'd recommend? Thanks!

Most accurate rifle I have is a weatherby Mark 5 in 257 wby. Have a 300 wby, and 243 win in a vanguard, a howa 1500 in 338 win, and a Smith and Wesson 1500 in 7mm remington. The vanguard, howa and Smith assassinated all the same rifle. The vanguard is a good rifle for the money. As the 257 wby it will be good for the purpose you want. Remington did make a rifle in 257 wby a view years ago, so you might find a used one around.

No flies on the 257. Check out the sub minute in the Weatherbys. You won't be disappointed.

I bought a .300 Weatherby Vanguard about 5 years ago. My only regret is that I didn't buy it 40 years ago. It has fast become my favorite rifle.
My .257 Ackley has been my favorite medium size game rifle for about 35 years. If I didn't have it, I would buy a .257 Weatherby in a heartbeat. Like muzzlestuffer posted, Weatherby ammo is expensive. I only shoot my handloaded ammo in all of my guns. Loading the same bullets, it only costs me about $0.10 per round more to load for my .300 Wby over a .30-06, because of the extra powder in the Bee. |
i shoot a 30-378 now that's pricey !!!

Is factory 7mm Allen Mag even available? Or this that strictly a hand loading proposition?
I've had a 300 Weatherby Magnum since 2000 and bought one box of factory ammo that year. Shortly after, I bought 100 rounds of brass. Now I'm always cruising gun shows to see if I can pick up a few rounds of cheap 300 Wby brass here and there. Just the brass is crazy-expensive now. Factory ammo is around $60-100, depending on what make. |
I inherited a .257 WBY Mag Mark 5. Has a place in my heart as it was my Grandfather's. Ammo is expenisve if you shoot a lot. I do not get to shoot it nearly as much as I like so the cost is not a deal breaker to me. Recoil is not rolling you over, which adds to accuracy and the speed of the bullet definetly gives you extended range. I would not hesitate to use this gun, with the right ammo, up to and including elk. May want to stick with the synthetic stock if you are going to be hunting in harsh climates. The barrel heats up very quickly when doing range work, keep an eye on that.
Get it and enjoy it. I would be surprised if you came back here saying that it was a mistake. |
