Default Marlin model 60, did I make a good choice?

I have been looking to get some kind of .22lr because I have never had one so I got a marlin model 60 today and am going to pick it up tomorow and wanted to know if the new model 60's were a good gun for the money? also does this gun need to be cleaned before I shoot it?

I have no idea about the newer ones, but I have one that I bought while in highschool when they first came out back in the 60s and have never had any problems with it. Just make sure the barrel is clear before you shoot it and then go have fun.

unless something has drastically changed, they have been well-regarded and classic for years.

I'd say a good choice.

I'm kind of curious to hear how it works for you. I used to have one when I was a kid (wished I still had it). I've only bought 1 Marlin (guide gun) since Remington bought out Marlin and I'm not impressed so far. Let us know how it shoots and functions.

For the price point you have an excellent rifle that should bring you a lifetime of joy plinking and hunting small game with it. Very reliable rifle and should cycle almost all brands of ammo from subsonic to high velocity bullets.

Feeding. It's a lever action obviously. It shoots really well and has lots of power (45-70) but it's nowhere near as reliable as my old (1950ish) Model 94. I've also noticed that some of the internal edges in the magazine tube are a little rough as well but that is more of a craftsmanship complaint than a function complaint.

I hope your Model 60 works flawlessly as I'd love to buy another one and would like to hear that Marlin (Remington) is making them well. If you Google search this website, there was a topic on 22 rifles a while back and the Marlins were well spoken of because of their rifling and accuracy. Hopefully this helps some.

I've had a Model 60 for almost 30 years. It's not as slick as a 10/22, and I've had some problems with cheap, dirty ammunition, but it's accurate and with good ammo (which any rifle deserves anyway), it's a great rifle.

I also have a newer 39A, and it's not the 39A of old. Still lots of steel, but the action isn't nearly as smooth as the old (pre-Remington) ones were. It's accurate, but I'm a little disappointed otherwise.

I bought 2 model 60s for my sons 3 years ago. Both have functioned flawlessly if lubed properly, both are plenty accurate. I'll be buying another 22 for my youngest son and wouldn't hesitate to get another model 60.
