Why do you think a .243 would drop faster than any other projectile at the same speed???

I didn't think that I was just told that they were not accurate at long rang but I guess I was wrong about that. For some reason some people I talk to think you need a large caliber to shoot long range. I know you don't need one just to shoot long rang it's just that they resist the wind better. Out here where I'm at the wind is almost always blowing so a larger caliber might be better as you can shoot a heavier bullet.

Correct, but it has nothing to do with bullet drop...

Left to right vs. up and down... Doesn't really matter that much. 243win comes with challenges for longer range work.
400yrd maximum is too short for a 243win as a target rifle or coyote rifle, likely too short as a max even as a whitetail rifle even, but better safe than sorry. 600yrds is a pretty comfortable number in the wind for me with most 6mm's. Larger case 6.5-7mm, or 30cals get my nod between 700-1000yrds. A lot more recoil to deal with (muzzle break and heavy rifle helps a lot), but a lot less wind drift to overcome.
Do some reading about Garand matches and Palma matches before you take too much credit away from the 30-06 or 308win.
At the end of the day, about 500-600yrds is about as far as any of us are allowed to shoot before things get hairy, no matter what cartridge you're shooting.

The 6.5's are great.
I shoot a bit of everything and opt for something bigger then a .243 for 1000. I have a .243 AI twisted for the 105gr Berger and at about 600-700 I grab a bigger gun.
A 140gr 6.5 bullet launched above 3000fps is pretty nice.
The new 150gr ABLR is really making some noise in the 270 WSM and Weatherby.
I just found out my 270 WSM is done and will be heading my way soon so I'll certainly be trying them out.

Ya I will be taking elk out of the mix. What is the opinoin on the savage model 11/111 long range hunter or the model 12 long range precision. I like the thought of a muzzle brake and an adjustable comb on the 11/111 but i don't know if the heavy barrel 12 would be better.
