My new critter getter - .17 HMR
1 Attachment(s)
I bought this Savage 93R17 GV on Saturday. This is my first Savage and I am in love with the accutrigger. The gun has a 21 inch heavy barrel and is very accurate. I have it zeroed at 100 yards and can't wait for a calm day so I can really push the limitations with this thing and see what I can do. :)

I have a .17 HMR and they are nothing but fun!
Mine is deadly accurate out to 150-175 with frequent hits on sage rats at 200. I love mine. |
Nice new toy. I have never shot one personally but have seen lots of posts by people who swear by them. I prefer the aftermath of hits with my Weatherby. 100 rats in a day makes for good off season practice.

I had one like that in stainless with a laminate stock. It was really picky about ammo, and most brands would not shoot very well at all. Only one brand of ammo gave reasonable accuracy in mine, but even then it was only just OK. It would shoot the CCI stuff much better than the rest.
Good luck with yours. I hope you got one of the good ones! |
I've been shooting Hornady 20 grain XTP out of mine and they are deadly accurate at 100 yards. On a target, anyway. I have yet to shoot past that or at any live animals. Maybe in a month or so we'll see what she can do to some of these Ohio Groundhogs.

I have several HMR's and they are quite fun to shoot.
Here's a Anschutz with a javelina taken with it at 130 yards. 20gr VMAX through the lungs....bang flop ![]() |
I have the same rifle only in left handed and a wood stock...it's deadly accurate and shoots everything I have stuffed in it (it's pretty common knowledge that The CCI factory in Idaho makes all four brands of commercially available 17 HMR ammo)...but it mine seems to prefer the 17g stuff slightly more. It's a pleasure to shoot and was the first accu-trigger Savage I bought (a couple years ago) that has since led me to purchase 2 more over the past couple years. It's a great accurate and fun rifle to shoot! Enjoy.

Everybody has mixed feelings about shooting coyotes with the .17 hmr... But thats one of the main things I'm gonna use mine for. DoubleA that's a nice kill. What scope is that? And Ridge Runner that's quite a poke! I hope I could even get that accurate!

It's a Zeiss 6.5x20 with target turrets which makes dialing in for longer distances quickly. Three of my 17 HMR's wear them. Have taken a few feral hogs out to 100yds with the little cartridge. I shoot some comps with a Cooper M57 that wears a 36X Weaver that shoots well. ![]() |
