My new critter getter - .17 HMR
1 Attachment(s)
I bought this Savage 93R17 GV on Saturday. This is my first Savage and I am in love with the accutrigger. The gun has a 21 inch heavy barrel and is very accurate. I have it zeroed at 100 yards and can't wait for a calm day so I can really push the limitations with this thing and see what I can do. :)

I have a .17 HMR and they are nothing but fun!
Mine is deadly accurate out to 150-175 with frequent hits on sage rats at 200. I love mine. |
Nice new toy. I have never shot one personally but have seen lots of posts by people who swear by them. I prefer the aftermath of hits with my Weatherby. 100 rats in a day makes for good off season practice.

I had one like that in stainless with a laminate stock. It was really picky about ammo, and most brands would not shoot very well at all. Only one brand of ammo gave reasonable accuracy in mine, but even then it was only just OK. It would shoot the CCI stuff much better than the rest.
Good luck with yours. I hope you got one of the good ones! |
I've been shooting Hornady 20 grain XTP out of mine and they are deadly accurate at 100 yards. On a target, anyway. I have yet to shoot past that or at any live animals. Maybe in a month or so we'll see what she can do to some of these Ohio Groundhogs.
|
I have several HMR's and they are quite fun to shoot.
Here's a Anschutz with a javelina taken with it at 130 yards. 20gr VMAX through the lungs....bang flop ![]() |
I have the same rifle only in left handed and a wood stock...it's deadly accurate and shoots everything I have stuffed in it (it's pretty common knowledge that The CCI factory in Idaho makes all four brands of commercially available 17 HMR ammo)...but it mine seems to prefer the 17g stuff slightly more. It's a pleasure to shoot and was the first accu-trigger Savage I bought (a couple years ago) that has since led me to purchase 2 more over the past couple years. It's a great accurate and fun rifle to shoot! Enjoy.

Everybody has mixed feelings about shooting coyotes with the .17 hmr... But thats one of the main things I'm gonna use mine for. DoubleA that's a nice kill. What scope is that? And Ridge Runner that's quite a poke! I hope I could even get that accurate!

It's a Zeiss 6.5x20 with target turrets which makes dialing in for longer distances quickly. Three of my 17 HMR's wear them. Have taken a few feral hogs out to 100yds with the little cartridge. I shoot some comps with a Cooper M57 that wears a 36X Weaver that shoots well. ![]() |
Very nice. I may have to look into that. Mine is sporting a Bushnell Banner 3-9X40 right now. Until I can afford something a little better.
|
I know someone with a Savage .17hmr. He really likes it and its a nice little setup for sure. He bang flopped a doe with it at 30yds, 17gr vmax bullet. Not your ideal deer hunting round, but it worked like a charm. LOL

Today, I was out shooting the new rifle. I took a .22 lr round (unfired) and pushed it into the cardboard box I was shooting at, so that just the back end with the primer was exposed. I knew I was hitting high and to the left about half an inch, so I aimed to compensate and squeezed the trigger. The .22 shell disappeared into the box. When I went to investigate, this is what I found. The .22 shell had fired and the bullet exited the left side of the box. Probably the best shot I've ever taken. I shot it at approximately 50 yards.
|
Very nice :D
|
Mine is scary accurate....after break in and about 100 rounds I was able to sit and slice a card on edge @ 50 yards...hitting it about 10% of the time.
|
Thank ya! And That is awesome. I might have to try that!

The bullet was facing away from me. The only way the .22 bullet would hit me would be to face me when it was fired. And the .17 bullet hitting the primer would have given the .22 round forward momentum, away from me. With a good backdrop, it's safe enough for me.

Ridge is that guy that hangs around and keeps the rest of us humble! In the right hands, placed properly, the rimfire mags will do a lot on coyotes. Guys like ridge are like the slim fast commercials with people that lost 100lbs, it happens, but he's the exception, not the rule. If you're a long poker, then you know your range capabilities. If you're not, then the .17hmr does the job for most guys to around 150ish.

wasn't a hard shot to make using the ballistic plex, its 11.06" per 100 yards to the top of the post so holding dead on top of the post I was doping 33.18" of drop for a 300 yard shot. sighted in at 150 yards its approx 34" low at 300.

I've never been much of a long range marksman. Hopefully with a little practice I can at least be decent at 250
|
Also, the entire brass casing was inside the box except for the rim/primer.
|
Wow. Looks like I'll stick to shooting paper lol.
