Default Replacement Barrels

I've got a Remington 700 in 243 and i'm gonna be replacing the barrel after the seasons over.

I've looked on the website of Shilen , Hart , Shaw and Lilja which barrels do you guys like for this particular gun and caliber.

Right now the factory barrel has 9 1/8" twist. Some of the the above mentioned manufactures offer the twist in 8" or 10". Don't plan on shooting BergersVLD's so i guess i'd be ok shooting a 100g bullet with a 10" twist correct ?

So which barrel do you guys prefer ?

What RR said...any name brands will do fine.

On the twist, I have a 1/8 Broughton 5c on my .243ai but it was built to shoot the 105gr Berger. I personally wouldn't go slower then a 1/9 on a .243...remember, you can't overstabilize a bullet!

Dont know about that, I just finished a 243 Win build with a 30 inch Krieger 7.5 twist(it's throated for the 115gr DTAC). Using a 105gr Amax, 3 out of 5 shots the bullet comes apart at about 35 yards from the muzzle. Having taken videos for bullet trace shows the little white puff of smoke is how I know, that and there are no holes on the target.

Probably it's a combination of speed, twist and jacket construction.

I was going to mention that...it could happen if you are pushing a thin jacket fast out of a long tube. But since the OP was talking hunting bullets I didn't want to confuse him...

Except, that seems really odd that they are coming apart on you out of a .243 Win. My 1/8 isn't THAT much slower then your 1/7.5 and it shoots the 105 A-Max, 95gr B-Tip and 87gr V-max really good.

Another question guys, the factory barrel is 24" i'm thinking of putting a 22" barrel on.Will that effect my discision on rate of twist?

Also what would i lose in velocity by cutting down the barrel by 2" ?
