Weatherby or Sako Poll
What do you think, Weatherby SBGM or the Sako Finnlight in a 30-06
|
RE: Weatherby or Sako Poll
I' ll take the Sako
|
RE: Weatherby or Sako Poll
Tough decision. I guess I would have to go with the Weatherby if you got the coin. The stock seems much nicer than the one on the Sako. But I like the Sako action better. Maybe the finnlight with a different stock.

Sako without a doubt.

I have a Weatherby,it' s nice but I like Sako better...;)

RE: Weatherby or Sako Poll
Have held both and have owned the Sako 75 in that garbage stock in a 7 rem mag...At least when I bought the Sako it was 750 dollars not 1160 dollars like the one in the Bass Pro Shop display...at the time I thought I could live with that ugly stock...the gun was uninspiring at the range and was entirely too heavy for hunting purposes although the machine work was beautiful but not as nice as my 2 older sakos...In todays world the Weatherby and it are comparably priced. Weathery action and trigger are very slick but the sako trigger gets the nod...Weatherby ammo however will be 25% more expensive...I wish you could borrow guns for a week and then return them if they didn' t shoot but you can' t so you take your chances and pay your money. You would be much better served getting a used model 70 reciever or a rem 700 and build a semi-custom rifle...or just buy a run of the mill under 700 dollar rifle it will shoot like those 1000+ rifles with a little work or maybe no work...

Sako............ or maybe save a few bucks for other things and get the Tikka!!!
|
RE: Weatherby or Sako Poll
Both are great, but I think you are better off with the Sako.

RE: Weatherby or Sako Poll
I wouldn' t buy either but of the two I would choose the sako.
|
RE: Weatherby or Sako Poll
Weatherby!! Good luck.

RE: Weatherby or Sako Poll
I Would save some money & buy a Remington or Winchester. The 30-06 is the most common rifle in the U.S.A. I just can' t see any reason to pay twice the price for a 30-06.
My choice would be the Sako Deluxe or Sako TRG. Good luck, |
RE: Weatherby or Sako Poll
Otis, get a grip. For 1160 dollars US currency you can build a better rifle that will shoot circles around it and have a better laminated stock or real fiberglass stock on it....I know I paid less than 650 bucks each averaging out the price of my 3 sakos when I bought them...There is no way they are worth what they are charging nowadays for them. Coincidentally thats why I see the new Sakos sitting at the gunshop for over a year with no one interested in buying them. Another question if a Tikka has the same barrel and same action as the older Sakos and some cost cutting measures why does it cost 1/2 as much?

Actually otis you are very fortunate to have a 1/2" factory rifle.Even with careful handloading most factory sako' s are not that accurate. The same can be said for almost all factory rifles. You do get the rare exceptionally accurate one but most average in the 1" to 1-1/2" range. On the other hand my gunbuilder would be embarrassed to send me a rifle that would not group well under 1" .

RE: Weatherby or Sako Poll
Buy a used Sako. We have two one from about 1972 and one from around 1980. Awesome. They don' t build them like that anymore.

RE: Weatherby or Sako Poll
I' ll go along with Otis. I' ve owned a number of Sakos through the years and found them to be exceptionally accurate. I' ve never owned one that wouldn' t shoot under 1" with good loads. I' d put against most custom sporter rifles out there.

RE: Weatherby or Sako Poll
sako

RE: Weatherby or Sako Poll
Otis, you explained your position well ...I was not aware there was that much price difference between the two brands...I certainly have not spent anywhere what the new Sakos here are selling for 1100+ dollars. I have a gunsmith that will build me a decent sem-custom rifle for about 1100-1200 bucks with me supplying the action and I get the kind of accuracy your getting but I have also had factory rifles that werent; Sakos produce that kind of accuracy most notably Browning A bolts and 1 ruger 77 stainless that I own. In the states both rifles are comparably priced....and you can get a bum Weatherby or a bum Sako but that would be more doubtful.

Just as information here are some canadian rifle prices from russells sports of calgary.
700bdl ss dm-magnum-$989.99 a-bolt stainless stalker with boss-magnum-$1189.99 model 70 classic stainless w/o boss magnum-$1019.99 mark V super big gamemaster-$1899.99 finnlight magnum-$1599.99 tikka all weather magnum-$919.99 As you can see the tikka is the lowest priced with the 700 slightly more. The finnlight is almost $700 more than the tikka. For the price of the mark V sbgm you could buy 2 tikkas and have money left over. It makes you wonder why anyone in canada would buy any weatherby except the vanguard.Even the finnlight is closing in on the price of a custom rifle which can be had for just over $2000 from a canadian gunbuilder. |

RE: Weatherby or Sako Poll
Otis -I have extra options on my customs such as fluted barrels and the sako extractor.I also use mcmillan stocks which are pillar bedded. My gunbuilder supplies the stainless 700 action and my final price comes in around $2500.If you leave out the fluted barrel and sako extractor and use a slightly cheaper stock the price comes down to just over $2000 total.

Weatherby.

RE: Weatherby or Sako Poll
Hi Gang,
My 2 cents worth..I went with the Weatherby AccurMark in 30/06.I think the resale value would be better than a custom, or Sako. Be Safe Walter |
